      Kate Thompson Cory (American, 1861-1958). Oil on board, 20th century. Signed at lower left. A wonderful floral still life by Kate Cory, an artist who following her studies at Cooper Union and the Art Students League in New York City moved to Arizona where she lived among, painted, and photographed the Hopi people and their landscape from 1905 until 1912. This composition features a stunning floral arrangement in a beautiful piece of pueblo pottery. All is delineated in a rich array of colors - shades of claret, lavender, rose, buttercup yellow, golden ochre, cornflower blue, and sunny orange against a violet background - with Cory's lush brushstrokes and expressive palette knife work, set in an attractive custom frame. Size (sight view): 19" L x 23" W (48.3 cm x 58.4 cm) Size (frame): 25" L x 29" W (63.5 cm x 73.7 cm) Kate Cory was an American painter, muralist, sculptor, and photographer who studied art at Cooper Union and the Art Students League in New York City and then traveled to the Southwest in 1905 where she lived among the Hopi peoples for several years while painting the Hopi people and documenting their culture with photographs. She had met artist Louis Akin at the Pen and Brush Club in 1905 after he had been to the Southwest and had decided to start an artists' colony in Northern Arizona. Soon thereafter, Cory got on a train to Canyon Diablo, Arizona and subsequently traveled north via the desert to the Hopi reservation. When she arrived, Cory discovered that she was the only art colonist there, but she stayed and lived among the Hopi from 1905 until 1912. Cory learned the language and was brought into the secret life and practices of the Hopi. She also painted the Hopi people and their landscape and took about 600 photographs to record their ways of life.
