MARIETTA LESLIE COTTON (1926/7-1865/6): WOMAN IN A FUR COAT

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Note: Cotton, born in NY, studied with Carolus-Duran and exhibited and won a prize at the Paris Salon of 1889. While living abroad she became a friend and neighbor of John Singer Sargent. He admired her portraiture: her ability to capture likeness and character. Cotton was twice painted by William Merritt Chase. One of the paintings, "Portrait of a Lady in Black," is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cotton had a talent for painting the right person at the right time and exhibiting her portraits when the sitters reached their height of popularity. She maintained studios in Paris, London and New York. Her friends and sitters included the Astors, Vanderbilts, the British Royals and Theatrical legends such as Greta Garbo, Pola Negri and Mistinguett.
