Graham Coughtry (Canadian 1931 - 1999), lithograph, untitled "Figure" 26/28 1982. Very large lithograph of a loosely lounging figure. Graham Coughtry's work was almost exclusively concerned with the abstracted human figure. Through his teaching at the Ontario College of Art and Design, the New School of Art, and York University, and by the example of his work, he had a substantial influence on a younger generation of painters in Toronto. He is represented in several public collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Graham Coughtry was born in 1931 at St-Lambert, Québec and lived in Toronto until his death in 1999. He became interested in art while at high school and later attended the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School. He studied at the Ontario College of Art where he graduated in 1953. He won an I. O.D.E. prize and a T. Eaton travelling scholarship in 1953 which financed his trip to France and Spain, 1954-55. His first exhibition was with Michael Snow at Hart House, University of Toronto, in 1955, and his first one-man show was held the following year at Avrom Isaacs's Greenwich Gallery in Toronto. He became, along with Snow, Joyce Weiland, Dennis Burton, Gordon Rayner, John Meredith and others, part of the "Isaacs Group" – artists joined by the radicalism of their art and by their interests in Dadaism and jazz.

This complex history exerts a considerable impact upon the development of the career and art of Graham Coughtry (1931-1999). The reaction to the prospect of abstract art in post-war Canada was outright hostile. Following graduation in 1945 Riopelle departed in 1946 to the friendlier environs of Paris, not to return to residence in Canada for decades. Paul-Émile Borduas was fired from his teaching job as a result of the radical nature of his art and the 1948 manifesto Refus Global. In Toronto, prospects for abstraction looked even more meagre. The principal exhibition vehicles were the art society annual shows. Abstract art was openly disparaged by many of the members of the O.S.A. who still clung to the tenets of the Canadian landscape. Within this context a group of Toronto artists banded together to find a more conducive environment to exhibit. In fall 1953 they held the spirited exhibition Abstracts at Home at the Robert Simpson Toronto store. They formed Painters 11 and held joint exhibitions through 1960. Miraculously the tide completely turned.Hart House, previously the stronghold of A.Y. Jackson and the Canadian Group of Painters, hosted a series of exhibitions of abstract art: Graham Sutherland and the British St. Ives Group, Roloff Beny, William Ronald, and a two-person exhibition of Michael Snow and Graham Coughtry. Where previously abstraction was shunned, every major educational centre reversed its faculty in favour of abstraction. As young students at the Ontario College of Art, Gordon Rayner and Dennis Burton (see lot 83) witnessed the Hart House exhibitions and vowed for ever more to paint only abstractions. They, along with Michael Snow, John Meredith, Joyce Wieland and Graham Coughtry, would form the nucleus of the Isaacs Gallery group, who all made primarily abstract art through 1962. Toronto Mayor, Nathan Phillips, took offense at some of the figurative works by Graham Coughtry in the 1955 Hart House exhibition and caused them to be temporarily removed. Incongruously, this minor episode breathed new life into representational art. Once again figuration could be considered radical not déclassé. The entire enterprise of the Isaacs group of artists changed direction, they evolved to embrace abstract figuration admixed with their admiration for dadaism and jazz.Coughtry, born in Quebec, studied at the School of Art and Design at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 1948-1949 and completed studies at the Ontario College of Art from 1949-1953. Despite the brevity of his Montreal studies one wonders whether the legacy of fauvistic colour and figuration from Morrice, Lyman (see lot 67) through to Goodridge Roberts might have inspired Coughtry and the rich lush impasto application of his works. Coughtry exhibited in group exhibitions across Canada, the United States and Europe., including the prestigious Venice Biennale (1960), the Sao Paolo International Biennial (1959), and the Guggenheim International, New York (1958, 1965). Graham Coughtry’s work is represented in many public and private collections in North America, including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Albright Knox Museum, Buffalo, and The Detroit Institute of Art. Reclining Figure Moving, #10, is a perfect example of the attributes that brought to Coughty the many accolades in recognition of his achievement as Canada’s most respected abstract figurative artist.Estimate: $25,000–35,000

Certainly a survey of Canadian art demonstrates the irrefutable accuracy of her statement. Even today one is struck by the paucity of figure work by Canadian artists exhibited in galleries or appearing on the market. Jeffrey Spalding quotes Graham Coughtry who spoke “for a new generation (of Canadian artists) by infamously exclaiming that ‘every damn tree in the country has been painted’.” In the early sixties Markle, Snow and Burton were incorporating the human figure into their work as was Coughtry, despite the fact that according to the AGO at that time “formalist criteria dismissed the figure as an inappropriate artistic concern.” A further wave of resistance would come later with discussions surrounding the male gaze. This lot is, however, as much a manifestation of the artist’s delight in celebrating the sensuosity and pleasure of paint as it is a celebration of flesh although admittedly, much work from this period, particularly the Two Figures works is sexually charged.Estimate: $9,000–12,000

With a preference for the abstract stirring the air, he showed at both the Carnegie International and at the Guggenheim International (at which the Canadian group of paintings won an honourable mention). It was also in this year, with the creation of a work entitled Dark Room, that Barry Hale noted a distinct shift in the manner of Coughtry's painting, which he attributed to the influence of Willem de Kooning. Coughtry explains: "I broke into a more dashing kind of paint handling, all of a sudden, where I found I could put down one great big stroke and actually let it stay there." The space of this untitled work is generalized and entirely abstract. While Coughtry's vibrant palette and large swaths and trickles of paint are present, his signature 'figure' is not yet articulated.

The series is inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses whose heroine, Salmacis, consummated her love for Hermaphroditus by uniting with him so closely that the two became one. With Two Figures Series XIX, "the essence of the myth of Hermaphroditus recurs, and which of the figures is male and which female, which Hermaphroditus and which Salmacis, becomes an increasingly ambiguous matter." A critic at the time said "Coughtry is caught up in the peculiar passion of being human in the twentienth century... his two figures come to terms with each other in an isolated, frightening ... terrible kind of love." Henry Malcolmson said "The sustained energy and concentration of this tour de force is unprecedented in Canadian art and, with the exception of certain of Picasso's efforts, I can recall no similar examples of such virtuosity in modern art."
