    Louis Cousin: Virgin and Child

    Est: €5,000 - €8,000

COUSIN, LOUIS ('Luigi Gentile') Brussels 1606 - 1667 Title: Virgin and Child. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 67 x 48,5cm. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. The present Madonna and Child was clearly attributed to Luigi Gentile by Daniele Benati. Luigi Gentile, the nickname by which the Belgian painter Louis Cousin (Brussels 1606 - 1667) is known in Italy, was active in Rome between 1626 and 1655. He is known for a number of altarpieces in Rome, Pesaro and Ghent, but the small paintings admired by his contemporaries have only been patchily researched. This present work is therefore a valuable addition to the reconstruction of the style of this still little-known artist. We are grateful to Daniele Benati, Bologna, who confirmed the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
