          Oct. 03, 2024

          HAROLD COUSINS (1916 - 1992) Flight.

          Est: $20,000 - $30,000

HAROLD COUSINS (1916 - 1992) Flight. Welded steel, mounted on a wooden base, 1952. Approximately 241x222x89 mm; 9½x8¾x3½ inches. Incised signature, lower right edge. Provenance: personal collection of the artist; thence by descent, family of the artist, Kenmore, New York; purchased from the family of the artist, private collection (2006). This striking steel sculpture by Harold Cousins comes from an important early body of modernist work, made during his first decade in Paris. Born and raised in Washington, DC, Cousins attended Howard University and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. Cousins then moved to New York, enrolled at the Art Students League and focused on creating sculpture. While there, Cousins studied under William Zorach, Will Barnet and Reginald Marsh, and also met his wife Peggy Thomas. They moved to Paris in October of 1949. Cousins first studied with Ossip Zadkine, and became close friends with artists Karel Appel and Shinkichi Tajiri, a fellow student of Zadkine's. Cousins also joined a community of expatriate African American artists in Paris including Ed Clark, Beauford Delaney, Herbert Gentry and Larry Potter. With funding from the GI Bill, many American artists moved to Paris to be at the forefront of the post-war art world. Flight is an excellent example of Cousins's mature postwar practice in Paris, and epitomizes his mid-century practice. Inspired by the Spanish modernist Julio Gonzalez, the first artist of the era to explore a new technique of welding steel, Cousins created delicate, expressive sculptures, which brought him great acclaim in Europe. Flight is constructly similarly with both plate and steel wire, and with the same whimsy as many of Cousins's early 1950s sculpture. The nonfigurative Flight recalls his breakthrough 1952 "drawing in space" and the abstract Composition, 1952. The first major exhibition of these steel sculptures was at Galerie Raymond Creuse in Paris in 1954. A group of these early works were reunited in 1996 in the Studio Museum in Harlem traveling exhibition Explorations in the City of Light: African-American Artists in Paris, 1945-1965. Early 1950s steel sculptures by Cousins are in several museum collections today, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. In 2023, the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery organized an important survey of Harold Cousins sculpture with Harold Cousins: Forms of Empty Space. Holman-Conwill pp. 62-63.

Provenance: the estate of the artist; Marc Cousins, New York, private collection (2006). Exhibited: on loan and view at the Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, Alabama, 2013-2022. This significant steel sculpture by Harold Cousins comes from an important early body of modernist work, made during his first decade in Paris. Inspired by the Spanish modernist Julio Gonzalez, the first artist of the era to explore a new technique of welding steel, Cousins created delicate, expressive sculptures, which brought him great acclaim in Europe. Viking is similar to Cousins's La Reine, 1952, in the collection of the Eskenazi Museum of Art, Indiana University - its dynamic form takes on strikingly different shapes from different view points. Harold Cousins (American, 1916-1992) Untitled Composition (Gothic Plaiton Type),

          Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Harold Cousins (American, 1916-1992) Untitled Composition (Gothic Plaiton Type), 1962 Welded steel rods and plates 51-1/2 inches (130.8 cm) high on a 5 inch (12.7 cm) high grey marble base Inscribed on center square: Cousins / 3/62 Black Art of a Distinguished Collector Primarily celebrated as a sculptor, Harold Cousins worked in a variety of mediums including stone, wood, metal and terracotta, and in a variety of styles from realism to total abstraction. In the 1950s and 1960s, he expressed his political views about racial integration in America with figurative works including Political Prisoner (1954) , Slave (1963), and Standing Figure (1963), a silhouette suggestive of the Ku Klux Klan. By the time he left for Europe in his 30s, the artist had already established a professional reputation in America. He grew up in northwest Washington, D.C. in an area known as "Black Broadway". In 1943, he began studies at Howard University and was much influenced by Alaine Locke, art historian and writer who encouraged pride and interest in African art. From 1943 to 1945, Cousins served in the U.S. Coast Guard working with Sonar, and then returned to his job at the U.S. Post Office, while studying sculpture in night classes. In 1948, determined to further his art studies and taking advantage of the GI Bill, he moved to New York City and enrolled at the Art Students League where his teachers were William Zorach, Will Barnett and Reginald Marsh. He met sculpture student Peggy Thomas, and they remained partners for the next thirty years. The coupled moved to Paris, leaving in October 1949, and there by pre-arrangement, he studied with Ossip Zadkine in a class of a dozen students. He also exhibited at Galerie Huit, the Salon des Independents and Salon de Jeune. His early works in Paris, influenced by Zadkine, were solid forms with classical and religious themes. Included were terracotta pieces titled Salomé, Seated Old Man, Gladiator and A La Pensée, and wood carvings Orphéus and A La Pensée. Wood carving such as Tree Spirit and "Poisson Vert" showed strong African-art influences. Among his close friends were Karel Appel, who, in turn, used his influence to get Cousins involved in a project for the Hunstzaal Hamel in Amsterdam to produce a series of terracotta and wood masks for his first European one-person show. During this period, his work became increasingly abstract, and his mediums included mixed-media facilitated by oxygen-acetylene welding that he learned from Shinkichi Tajiri, a fellow student at Zadkine's studio. However, this experimentation, which allowed him to assemble odd-seemingly unrelated pieces, earned the disapproval of Zadkine, and led to a distancing of their relationship. Cousins associated with many modernists and was part of The Parisian School, the European avant-garde that included Appel as well as Americans Paul Jenkins, Sam Francis and Joan Mitchell. Cousins also became much influenced by the work of Julio Gonzalez, whose work he saw first-hand due to a friendship with the daughter of Gonzalez, who had her father's private collection and freely shared it with Cousins. The last two decades of Cousins' live were marred by his ill health from oral cancer, which some attribute to his refusal to use a mask when he worked with oxygen-acetylene. However, he continued to exhibit and even did theatre sets for the production of "Four Penny Opera". In 1996, the Studio Museum in Harlem held a posthumous traveling exhibition of his work: "Explorations in the City of Light: African-American Artists in Paris, 1945-1965". In 2000, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York acquired his sculpture, Torso (1952). HID01801242017

          HAROLD COUSINS (1916 - 1992) Composition.

HAROLD COUSINS (1916 - 1992) Composition. Welded and patinated steel, mounted on a black marble base, 1961. Approximately 457x152x76 mm; 18x6x3 inches. 600 mm; 23 5/8 inches high, including the base. Incised "H. Cousins, Paris, 1961" on verso. Provenance: private collection, France. This striking, modern sculpture comes from an important body of work the artist made in Paris. In New York, Cousins studied under William Zorach, Will Barnet and Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League, where he also met his wife Peggy Thomas. The couple moved to Paris in October 1949, where he first studied with Ossip Zadkine, and became close friends with Karel Appel. But it wasn't until he had befriended the sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri and learned to weld steel with oxygen-acetylene that his work became completely abstract. The artist assembled metal rod formations in the early 1950s, which he called "forests," free-standing groupings of linear and flattened forms. This series brought him his first critical success in Paris. He then began to add the metal plates or plaitons in 1957. In 1996, many of these early works were included in the Studio Museum in Harlem's traveling exhibition Explorations in the City of Light: African-American Artists in Paris, 1945-1965. Illustrated: Explorations in the City of Light: African-American Artists in Paris, 1945 - 1965, the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, fig. 23, p. 64. One of his earliest steel sculptures to come to auction, Harold Cousins's Composition is a remarkable example of mid-century abstraction in sculpture. This abstract composition comes from the artist's first year of working in steel in Paris. In New York, he had studied under William Zorach, Will Barnet and Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League, where he also met his wife, Peggy Thomas. The couple moved to Paris in October 1949, where he first studied with Ossip Zadkine, and became close friends with Karel Appel. But it wasn't until he had befriended the Japanese-American sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri and learned to weld steel that his work became completely abstract. Composition shows the light and open nature of his subjects in scrap metal before he began the plaitons series in the latter half of the decade. Cousins had his first solo exhibition of these steel works two years later in 1954 at Galerie Creuze in Paris.

The couple moved to Paris in October 1949, where he first studied with Ossip Zadkine, and became close friends with Karel Appel. But it wasn't until he befriended the Japanese-American sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri and learned to weld steel with oxygen-acetylene that his work became completely abstract. In the early 1950s, the artist started assembling metal rod formations, which he called "forests," free-standing groupings of linear and flattened forms. This series brought him his first critical success in Paris. Holman-Conwill pp. 62-63.

With the artist's incised signature on the back. Provenance: ex-collection the artist; William Lieberman, New York; the current owner. This abstract steel sculpture comes from a body of work the artist made during his first decade in Paris. In New York, he had studied under William Zorach, Will Barnet and Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League, where he also met his wife Peggy Thomas. The couple moved to Paris in October 1949, where he first studied with Ossip Zadkine, and became close friends with Karel Appel. The artist assembled metal rod formations in the early 1950s, which he called "forests," free-standing groupings of linear and flattened forms. This series brought him his first critical success in Paris. He then began to add the metal plates or plaitons in 1957. In 1996, many of these early works were included in the Studio Museum in Harlem traveling exhibition Explorations in the City of Light: African-American Artists in Paris, 1945-1965.
