It was acquired by Galerias La Granja (Mexico City) where it later became part of the Renato Leduc collection, then to the current owner. Caption: "The Swedish actress who, in America has played roles of almost every country except Sweden. She is now very much of a personage in France having enacted, in the city of Paris, the exacting role of Madame Sans Gêne, Sardou's heroine of the Napoleonic era." This work is a second version of an illustration published in "Six derisions from a Mexican pencil: contemporary Americana pictured by Covarrubias," Vanity Fair, March 1925.

    Miguel Covarrubias, Mexican, American, 1904 to 1957, pencil painting on laid paper depicting the sketch of a portrait. Signed with initials, lower right. Framed. Completed with an original letter verifying the authenticity of the sketch, signed by Anahi Luna, and dated January 2023. Provenance: Fondo Editorial de la Plastica Mexicana, Mexico City, with their ink stamp verso. Miguel Covarrubias, also known as José Miguel Covarrubias Duclaud was a Mexican painter, caricaturist, illustrator, ethnologist and art historian. Along with his American colleague Matthew W. Stirling, he was the co discoverer of the Olmec civilization. One of a kind artwork.
