      Est: €1,800 - €2,000

ADELARDO CORVASÍ YUSTAS (Badajoz, 1885 - 1951). "Winter (Extremadura) ", 1943. Oil on panel. Signed and dedicated in the lower right corner. Dated and titled on the back. Measurements. 15,5 x 22 cm; 30 x 36 cm (frame). The landscape was one of the genres in which Adelardo Corvasí cultivated the most, in such a way that his work reflects a wide variety, adapting pictorially diverse locations starting from his native Extremadura. His mastery and intense landscape painting activity involved a great mastery of technique, being a master in capturing light and atmosphere. This work is a clear example of this, as the author captures the view of a castle in the distance, dominated by an atmosphere of grey and leaden tones where a timid sun defines the sunset of a cold winter's day. An Extremaduran painter of landscapes, genre and hunting themes, Adelardo Covarsí was initiated into art by Felipe Checa, thanks to the encouragement of his father, a great art collector. From Checa he inherited the realistic language and the solidity of drawing, the basis of his painting. He later completed his training at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he entered in 1903 and had as a companion Eugenio Hermoso, also from Extremadura, whose influence would be decisive in the development of the young Covarsí's work. After completing his studies he travelled around Spain and Europe, visiting Italy, France, England, Portugal and the Netherlands. As a result of this trip he published "Italia, impresiones de viaje por un pintor" (1910), which for a time was compulsory reading for students at San Fernando. He returned to Badajoz in 1907, where he became a drawing teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts, replacing the still-life painter Francisco Checa. From then on he combined teaching with artistic practice, and became known through the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, being awarded the third medal in 1908 and 1912, the second in 1922 and the first in 1948, for the painting "El montero de Alpotreque" (Museo del Prado). He was also awarded prizes abroad at the Buenos Aires International Exhibition in 1910 and again for "El montero de Alpotreque" at the Panama International Art Exhibition in 1916 and at the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville in 1929. He also cultivated decorative painting, a facet in which his paintings on mythological themes, executed in 1916 for the Carolina Coronado Theatre in Almendralejo (Badajoz), are particularly noteworthy. He also produced a number of advertising works, such as the hunting-themed illustrations for the UEE almanacs of 1926, 1927 and 1941. His most celebrated works were precisely those on hunting and mountaineering, a theme he developed probably influenced by his father, Antonio Covarsí, a prominent hunter and author of several books on the subject. At the same time, he carried out important cultural work as director of the School of Fine Arts and the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts in Badajoz, and also as a frequent contributor to the "Revista de Estudios Extremeños". Covarsí's works are currently held in the Badajoz Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, the MAXAM Foundation, the Prado Museum (works on deposit at the Badajoz Museum) and various private collections.
