        λ KEITH COVENTRY (BRITISH B. 1958)ALEXANDER THE GREAT; A MILLWALL FAN Oil on canvas, wood, glass & goldleaf, in two parts Both signed and dated 1993 (verso) Each 69 x 39cm (27 x 15¼ in.) (2)Provenance:Curt Marcus Gallery, New YorkSale, Christie's, Contemporary Art, 8 December 1999, lot 167In 326BC Alexander The Great singlehandedly attacked a fortress containing 50,000 Indian Soldiers. In 1985, a Millwall fan singlehandedly attacked over 200 Luton fans.The restrained and often abstract works of Keith Coventry engage meaningfully with sociohistorical concerns. Coventry won the John Moores Painting Prize in 2010; his works can be found in the collections of Tate Modern, MoMA, and the Walker Art Center. The artist's practice is diverse, ranging from monochromatic impasto to Walter Sickert references and interpretations of Han van Meegeren's forgeries. Coventry has classified the present diptych - a typically unusual and tongue-in-cheek juxtaposition - as 'abstract history paintings' (Keith Coventry, Hirst, Fairhurst, Hume, Coventry, Quinn, p. 14). Reminiscent of Kazimir Malevich's suprematist canvases, these works support the Derridean understanding of title as parergon, without which the image itself remains indeterminate. The Millwall picture alludes to the 1985 Luton riot, which saw the notoriously unruly visitors clash with home supporters. This instance of hooliganism is associated with Alexander the Great's triumphant Siege of Aornos in a somewhat misleading David-and-Goliath arrangement, as in both cases the warring parties were evenly matched. The similarity and visual impact of this pair alludes to their overarching significance as a monument to narrative: moments across millennia, from the theatre of war to the sporting arena, are linked by their readiness to be chronicled and, more often than not, mythologised.

        Keith Coventry,  Ontological Picture, 2010;

        Est: £3,000 - £4,000

        Keith Coventry,  British b.1958 -  Ontological Picture, 2010;  oil on canvas board, signed and dated on the reverse 'K. Coventry 2010', 20 x 14.9 cm (ARR)  Note: The Ontological Picture series (1996-2004) encapsulates Coventry’s desire to bring contemporary political, social and cultural issues into dialogue with key movements of twentieth-century art and philosophy. The series is closely related to his earlier Estate Paintings (1992-2000) which isolated visual elements from British council estate aerial view maps in order to resemble works of key modernist figures such as Kazimir Malevich or Piet Mondrian. For the present series, Coventry appropriated the ‘You Are Here’ arrows from the same maps and turned them into wooden models which he scattered arbitrarily across the canvas, creating the forms of the work. Coventry ironically uses the art language associated with the modernist utopian idealism that spawned these high-density housing projects to comment on the realities of contemporary city life. Coventry is hugely respected as both an artist and curator. He co-founded and curated City Racing, an influential not-for-profit gallery in Kennington, South London from 1988 to 1998. The gallery gave valuable exposure to artists such as Sarah Lucas, Gillian Wearing and Fiona Banner. Earlier this year Pace Gallery exhibited ‘Keith Coventry: City Racing’, showing celebrated bodies of work alongside a new series. In 2010 he won the John Moores Painting Prize for his Spectrum Jesus painting. His work has been exhibited widely in the United Kingdom and Europe and is included in collections worldwide, including the British Council; Tate Modern; Arts Council of England; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

        Jan. 11, 2023

        § KEITH COVENTRY (BRITISH 1958-) SUPERMODEL (KATE MOSS) - 2000

        Est: £3,000 - £5,000

        § KEITH COVENTRY (BRITISH 1958-) SUPERMODEL (KATE MOSS) - 2000 Stamped 'KC / 2000 / NO 1', gold-plated steel (66cm x 42.5cm x 10cm (26in x 16.75in x 4in)) Note: This work was produced in an edition of 10, plus 5 artist's proofs. Keith Coventry is one of the least-heralded of the generation of Britsh artists that came to be known as the ‘YBAs’ (Young British Artists), despite his work featuring in many of the key exhibitions of the period, including the era-defining Sensation at the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1997, which burnished many of the YBA artists’ legends. Coventry’s work has all the hallmarks of the ‘YBAs’: funny, irreverent, obsessed with pop culture and very deliberately – and knowingly - eliding the borders between ‘high’ and ‘low’, in terms of subject-matter. However, where it differs is that Coventry chose to filter contemporary life through the lens of art history – such as in his most famous paintings that recast council hoardings mapping the layouts of grim housing estates into the hermetic visual language of Russian Suprematism. We see the same tactics at play in the present work: Kate Moss, the pop icon of 90s and early 2000s Britain, is here abstracted into two mysterious golden rings. It is contemporary art recast in the language of geometric Modernism, albeit with a hint of post-Modernism and Duchamp. It is a sculpture that would be at home in Tate Modern. But equally, in the use of gold, it could also work as a totem from an ancient culture, a goddess of some unknown religion, to be found in a vitrine in the British Museum. When the ‘supermodel’ works were show at Emily Tsingou’s gallery in 2000, the only clue as to what the viewer was seeing was to be found on a postcard left near the gallery entrance. It featured a photograph of Moss on the cover of Vogue, with two circles drawn over her, revealing the underlying geometry that becomes the extent of the final works. As the critic Jonathan Jones noted in his review of the exhibition in The Guardian, ‘All [the supermodel works] have been made using a technique…Coventry borrowed from a 1930s book, Cassell's New Popular Educator, whose cover has a man staring into the sun of knowledge and promises to inform readers about "art and literature", "languages and history", and "science and mathematics". The drawing method Coventry discovered here claimed to reduce visible reality to its geometrical essentials. The inspiration came from Cézanne's statement that one must look in nature for the sphere, the cone and the cylinder. Coventry has looked for the sphere, the cone and the cylinder in the pages of Vogue.'

It is contemporary art recast in the language of geometric Modernism, albeit with a hint of post-Modernism and Duchamp. It is a sculpture that would be at home in Tate Modern. One might add to Jones’s review, that these shapes Coventry found in Vogue, very pointedly, turned out to be hollow.
