Back Reads: DAVID COX R.W.S (Royal Watercolor Society) David Cox (1783-1859) was a distinguished British landscape painter of watercolor and later in life, oils. Born at Detitend, near Birmingham, Cox exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1805. He was President of the Associated Artists in Watercolor in 1810 and was elected a Member of the Society in 1813. The present work depicts figures on horseback in what appears to be Tudor dress, in an imagined historical scene at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, which is visible in the distance. This work exhibits the characteristic loose style which imparts Cox's works with a sense of freshness and vitality.
