      Jacob Cox (1810-1892) Portrait of George Thayer of Plymouth, Indiana Circa 1863 The work is unsigned. Supporting materials attribute the work to Indiana artist Jacob Cox who was known to paint in and around the sitter's hometown. There are stylistic similarities as well, including the handling of the distant countryside landscape behind Mr. Thayer, which strongly resembles signed landscapes by Jacob Cox. Canvas measures 27 x 22 with a framed size of 32 x 27.25 inches.       Jacob Cox (American, 1810-1892), two cows drinking from the pond, oil on canvas; 19 5/8" x 29 1/2"; unsigned. Three small pinholes lower right field. Cox continued to paint and exhibit until his death in 1892. Competition from younger artists like T.C. Steele had forced him out of the portrait business in the 1880s, but his "compositions" of landscapes filled with farm animals and still lifes continued to be popular.

      down, 25" x 18", (presented in 1924 to library by Mrs. Spencer Ball). Cox began as a tinsmith, but took up portrait painting in 1835, with exception to a few trips to Cincinnati (1842-43) and New York, he spent the rest of his life in Indianapolis. In 1853, he collaborated with Henry Waugh on a panorama, but was known primarily for his portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. REF: Art and Artists of Indiana, Burnett; Pioneer Painters of Indiana, Peat. A rare and interesting work by this early Indiana painter.
