      WILLARD R. COX (1902-1974) CARLSBAD CAVERNS / SOUTHERN PACIFIC. Circa 1939. 23x16 1/4 inches, 58 1/2x41 1/4 cm. Condition A- / B+: minor repaired tears at edges; creases and abrasions at edges and outer image; pin holes in corners. In 1940, the geologically stupendous Carlsbad Caverns became part of Southern Pacific's advertising as a great day trip on the journey west to see San Francisco's World's Fair. Travelers could disembark in El Paso and then travel by "big, stream-lined, air-conditioned motor coach" to see the caverns, and be back in El Paso by the evening to continue their westward journey. The railroad used this same image in newspaper ads (see Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, May 29, 1940).

      Willard Roswell Cox (1902-1974) Circa 1937 The American artist Willard Cox was associated with Kansas, California and Seattle and held membership in numerous societies of painters and watercolorists. This suitably framed work is signed lower left. Sight size measures 10.5 x 15.5 with a framed size of 14.5 x 19.25 inches.
