ATTRIBUTED TO MARMADUKE CRADOCK (CIRCA 1660-1717)

      Est: £4,000 - £6,000

ATTRIBUTED TO MARMADUKE CRADOCK (CIRCA 1660-1717) ATTRIBUTED TO MARMADUKE CRADOCK (CIRCA 1660-1717) A peacock, turkey, chickens, rooster, chicks and a duck in a parkland setting oil on canvas 52 x 56 cm Marmaduke Cradock was born in Somerset in 1660 and as a young man became an apprentice to a house painter in London. Following this, he began painting still life including birds, as shown in the present example. Cradock specialised in depictions of domestic birds and his work reflects the influence of other recognised artists in this genre, including Jakob Bogdani, Melchior do’Hondecoeter, and Peter Frans Casteels. Today, examples of his sketches are preserved in the British Museum. • Marmaduke Cradock (1660 - 1716), A brace of pheasants, a curlew and other birds in an evening landscape
      Apr. 18, 2024

Marmaduke Cradock (1660 - 1716), A brace of pheasants, a curlew and other birds in an evening landscape

      Est: £8,000 - £12,000

Marmaduke Cradock (1660 - 1716) A brace of pheasants, a curlew and other birds in an evening landscape Signed in full centre right Oil on canvas, in a fine Georgian carved and gilded frame. The present work offers a great insight into the artist, being one of only three known signed oil paintings in private collections. The more ‘anamoly’ depictions of birds most frequently associated with Cradock are put into doubt when viewed against this and the other two signed examples by the artist. Little is known of Cradock’s early life or artistic training, yet his legacy endures through the small but notable body of work which remains, primarily consisting of landscapes with birds, both exotic and domestic. He is highly regarded for his skillful handling of light and atmosphere, as evidenced in the present work, which injects the natural world with a marvellous sense of the theatrical. Dimensions: (Canvas) 28.5 in. (H) x 40.5 in. (W) (Frame) 34 in. (H) x 46 in. (W)

      * Cradock (Marmaduke, circa 1660-1717, attributed to). Shelducks in a Landscape, oil on canvas Attributed to Marmaduke Cradock (Somerset circa 1660-1717 London). Shelducks, Teal and Pochard in a Landscape, oil on canvas, 89 x 74 cm (35 x 29 1/8 ins), gilded frame (107 x 90 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Property of a Gentleman, East Yorkshire, purchased in 1932 as a gift for his wife (information supplied by the current owner, a descendant); Private Collection, Wiltshire, England. In his Anecdotes of Painting in England (first published in 1762), Horace Walpole wrote: Luke Craddock died early in this reign [George I] was a painter of birds and animals, in which work he attained much merit by the bent and force of his genius, having been so little initiated even in the grammar of his profession, that he was sent from Somerton, near Ilchester in Somersetshire, where he was born, to be apprentice to a house-painter in London, with whom he served his time. Yet there, without instructions, and with few opportunities of studying nature in the very part of the creation which his talents led him to represent, he became, if not a great master, a faithful imitator of the inferior class of beings. His birds in particular are strongly and richly coloured, and were much sought as ornaments over doors and chimney-pieces. I have seen some pieces of his hand painted with a freedom and fire that entitled them to more distinction. He worked in general by the day, and for dealers who retailed his works; possessing that conscious dignity of talents that scorned dependence, and made him hate to be employed by men whose birth and fortune confined his fancy, and restrained his freedom...."
