Bruce Crane Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Painter, b. 1857 - d. 1937

(b New York, New York, 1857; d Bronxville, New York, 1937) American painter. In 1874, Crane moved to New Jersey and worked as a draftsman. From 1878 until 1882 he was a member of the Art Students League in New York and traveled to Europe to continue his studies. While in France, Crane worked at the colony at Grez-sur-Loring along with Birge Harrison, Kenyon Cox and Alexander Wyant. A strong influence of the French Barbizon School of painting is apparent in his works. Upon moving back to New York, Crane had a studio in the city until 1914 when he moved to Bronxville. Crane went on to form the Twelve Landscape Painters exhibiting artists’ organization in 1915 with Emil Carlsen, Charles H. Davis and J. Alden Weir. The group worked in the representational style popular at the time. Crane frequently painted the landscape of Long Island, the Catskills, the Adirondacks and the areas around his studio in Old Lyme, Connecticut. He was a member of the American Water Color Society, the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Artists, the Grand Central Art Gallerie and the Salmagundi Club; and exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme Connecticut, among others.

CRANE, Bruce (American, 1857-1937). Untitled [Landscape]. Oil on canvas. 23 3/4” x 35 1/2” framed. Robert Bruce Crane (1857 – October 29, 1937) was an American painter. He joined the Lyme Art Colony in the early 1900s. His most active period, though, came after 1920, when for more than a decade he did oil sketches of woods, meadows, and hills. He developed into a Tonalist painter under the influence of Jean-Charles Cazin at Grez-sur-Loing. Crane's mature works were nearly always fall and winter scenes. He usually painted in his studio in Bronxville, New York, where like many of the Tonalists he relied mostly on memories of his outdoor sketching experiences. Selected work can be found at the Florence Griswold Museum and the Newark Museum. He is a descendant of the Continental Congressman Stephen Crane.

Bruce (Robert Bruce) Crane (1857 - 1937) Oil on Canvas, Signed Lower Left, Measures (18 x 24 inches) w/frame (24 x 30 inches) A popular landscape painter, especially of golden toned landscapes that conveyed fall and winter seasons, Bruce Crane, also a teacher, was strongly influenced by the French Barbizon school of painting and had a studio for many years in Old Lyme, Connecticut. He also painted on Long Island, the Catskills, and the Adirondacks. In 1882, he was in France at the colony at Grez-sur-Loring with Birge Harrison, Kenyon Cox, and Alexander Wyant, but he maintained a studio in New York City until he moved to Bronxville in 1914. He took early art lessons from Alexander Wyant in New York City and then studied in Europe. He became a member of the National Academy of Design, the American Water Color Society, the Salmagundi Club, the Society of American Artists, and the Grand Central Art Galleries. One of his great admirers was J. Francis Murphy with whom his work has often been compared.
