David Cressey (American, 1916-2013) Untitled Mixed media on Masonite, framed 40-1/4 x 48 inches (102.2 x 121.9 cm) Signed lower right: David Cressey David Cressey was a Californian ceramicist, sculptor and painter known for his iconic planters which were instrumental in the development of the mid-century California school of design. During his tenure at Architectural Pottery in Orange County from 1961-1976, beginning as their first artist in residence and eventually serving as vice president, he transformed the humble planter from garden decoration into an object of art. He had a profound interest in texture, landscape, and function, which is present throughout his entire body of work. His three-dimensional forms were often carved with elaborate designs and tooled patterns inspired by nature, which effectively served to transcend the boundary between indoor and outdoor space, connecting the vessel with its surroundings. After retiring from Architectural Pottery he shifted his focus to painting, generating a compelling yet lesser-known body of work. Similar to his planters, his paintings also blur the line between external and internal experiences. Dubbing them "Innerscapes", Cressey created abstract landscapes that both evoke the physical landscape and topography of the outside world as well as one's unique emotional and physical topographies. While he generally used earth tones in his ceramics, his paintings incorporate a wider swath of colors, such as mint green, indigo, fuchsia and puce. The use of terracotta tones in the background acts as a through line between his two- and three-dimensional work, rendering a sense of continuity throughout his oeuvre. Cressey's paintings are perhaps more intimate and personal extensions of the innovation that made him stand out among the major proponents of Californian mid-century design. David Cressey was a Californian ceramicist, sculptor and painter known for his iconic planters which were instrumental in the development of the mid-century California school of design. HID04901242017
