Monte Crews, Oil on Canvas, ‘Sailor, Soldier’, USA, 20th C.

      Est: $400 - $520

Oil on canvas USA, first half of the 20th century Monte Crews (1888-1946)—American illustrator Signed lower left ‘MONTE CREWS’ Indistinctly inscribed to edges of canvas Dimensions: 12 x 22 in. (30.4 x 55.8 cm) Image dimensions: 11 x 19 5/8 in. (27.9 x 49.8 cm) Good condition Estimate $500-$700 This black and white oil on canvas painting by American artist Monte Crews depicts three men in conversation. It appears that the seated man on the left with a safari hat is accusing another man, who avows his innocence. Crews may have created this piece as an illustration for one of the magazines he was freelancing at the time. An inscription at the edge of the canvas verso may say ‘Boys Life’, which was one of the magazines Crews sent work to. Minor abrasions throughout; loose on stretcher; otherwise appears in basic good condition. The painting’s stretcher dimensions measure 12 x 22 inches, while the image dimensions measure 11 x 19 5/8 inches. Monte Crews (American, 1888-1946) American illustrator Monte Crews initially studied art at the University of Missouri in 1905, however, by the end of spring semester of 1906, Crews left the university to study with artist George Bridgman at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1908 he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Art Students League in New York City. After his first year at the Art Students League, he won another scholarship for Best Illustrations. As an artist, one of Crews’ favorite hobbies was collecting old magazines and cutting out the illustrations. They certainly inspired Crews, who, after graduating and returning to Missouri, began to freelance as an illustrator to magazines such as ‘Boys’ Life’, ‘Baseball Magazine’, ‘Leslie’s Weekly’, ‘Red Book’ and ‘The American Magazine’. In 1926, Crews and his family moved Kansas, where he illustrated newspaper advertising. The following year, he began teaching illustration at the Kansas City Art Institute, educating artists such as R.G. Harris, Emery Clarke and John Falter. During his tenure, he continued selling his illustrations to both commercial and pulp magazines, some of the latter including ‘Argosy’ and ‘Blue Book’, which he contributed to regularly for many years. In 1933, Crews returned to New York, where he was hired to teach illustration at the Phoenix Art Institute and, in 1938, at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Towards the end of his life, he taught at the Moore Institute of Philadelphia until he died suddenly at the age of fifty-eight in 1946.
