      Worked in Wool on linen this is an embroidery by or after noted artist Mary Ellen Crisp (Nutley, New Jersey 1896). The artist has depcted a scene reminiscent of the American West. A wagon train with pioneers treks across the page while Native Americans sit at teepees and ride horses in the background. In the foreground, two bears look on. This piece bears the artist's embroidered signature on the face, unframed but mounted, 11 1/2h x 16 1/2"w. Condition: Excellent estate condition. condition, free of rips, tears and stains. Crisp designed this image but it is not known if she executed the work. A similar embroidery on identical substrate is in the Cooper Hewitt Museum, NY. Crisp's work can be found in the permanent collections of Smithsonian American Art Museum, D.C. (1960.11.1), the Cooper Hewitt Museum, National Design Museum, N.Y., which has 2, one being a scene of the American West, much like that being offered. Crisp also executed the designs her husband Arthur Watkins Crisp, painter, muralist, designer (1881 - 1974) created.
