The painting fits loosely in its frame, and has scratches along the edges. There are also two scuffs in the waterfall. The frame has minor chips. XVII con el Romanticismo de Richard Wilson, dió como resultado formal una pintura de fuertes contrastes de luz y sombras. Los primeros paisajes de Crome fueron muy detallados. Fue uno de los primeros artistas de su generación, por ejemplo, en representar especies específicas de árboles en sus obras. Crome asimiló el naturalismo de artistas Meindert Hobbema (1638-1709), Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-82), Jan Wynants (c.1625-84), así como Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88). En 1803 funda la escuela de Norwich de pintores. Trabajó tanto la acuarela como el óleo. Note: This panel is of particular interest as it demonstrates the style of landscape painting most obviously connected to the Norwich School, and in particular to John Crome. The influence of the Dutch on East Anglia, and on Norwich in particular, is discussed in detail in Andrew Moore's book Dutch and Flemish Painting in Norfolk, Norfolk Museums Service, 1988. It has been suggested by Dr Norman Goldberg, who saw the painting at Templewood in 1963, that it was started by Ladbrooke, but that the clouds and sky were completed by Crome, with Ladbrooke painting the foreground and all the figures, except the broad figure with his back to the viewer in the central boat.
