When Cape died in 1960 Wren Howard became chairman. Michael Howard worked for the publishers for many years, and wrote a history of Jonathan Cape: Jonathan Cape, publisher: Herbert Jonathan Cape, G. Wren Howard which appeared in 1971, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the company. After leaving the business Howard set up an artists' retreat at Boughrood Castle in the Brecon Beacons, Wales.

        ⊕ HUGH CRONYN (BRITISH 1905-1996) Hugh Cronyn (lots 186-193) Introduction Young, impressionable and fresh from Toronto where he had studied with the Group of Seven painter Frank Johnston, Cronyn departed Canada with an irrepressible can-do New World outlook. His unpublished memoirs recount his pre-war years: his time at the Arts Students League in New York in 1929; the early 1930s in Paris tutored by Jean Despujols and André Lhote; bicycling across the Alps; and on his arrival in England his immersion into bohemian life in West London. From the mid-thirties he rented various studios by the Thames in Hammersmith and met many of the leading artists and writers of the day. One such was Ivon Hitchens, whose second solo exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery he helped hang. But most influential in his circle of friends was the critic, humourist and politician A P Herbert ('APH') and his wife Gwen, herself a painter and stage-designer of note. At their home at 12 Hammersmith Terrace, Cronyn met the likes of Edward Wadsworth, Mark Gertler, Leon Underwood and John Piper. Ceri Richards lived nearby, as did poets Robert Graves and Laura Riding in St Peter’s Square. He went on painting trips to Dorset with Julian Trevelyan, his neighbour at Durham Wharf, and to the French-Spanish border with Ray Coxon and Edna Ginese at the time of the Spanish Civil War. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Cronyn was commissioned into the Royal Navy. Put in charge of the Naval bomb disposal squad in Bristol dockyards, he was the first Canadian to be awarded the George Medal (GM). In 1942 he married Jean Harris and settled in Suffolk where from 1949-69 he was tutor of painting at Colchester School of Art teaching alongside John Nash, Edward Bawden, Carel Weight and Peter Coker. From 1963 the Cronyns began to spend their summers in Quercy in the Lot, first renting a 15th century gatehouse and studio, then a small house, Les Vergers, before buying a dilapidated farmhouse in 1970 in Caufour which they renovated. From 1974 the Cronyns spent the winter months in 3 St Peter’s Wharf, next door to Hammersmith Terrace, in one of the artists’ studios overlooking the Thames constructed by Julian Trevelyan. Cronyn's late paintings of the river, which capture the spectrum of colours as the seasons changed, document the river’s moods from winter mists to intense summer sun, and hang in many private collections. Causses are flat limestone plateaus that are a feature of the area. His unpublished memoirs recount his pre-war years: his time at the Arts Students League in New York in 1929; the early 1930s in Paris tutored by Jean Despujols and André Lhote; bicycling across the Alps; and on his arrival in England his immersion into bohemian life in West London. From the mid-thirties he rented various studios by the Thames in Hammersmith and met many of the leading artists and writers of the day. One such was Ivon Hitchens, whose second solo exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery he helped hang. But most influential in his circle of friends was the critic, humourist and politician A P Herbert ('APH') and his wife Gwen, herself a painter and stage-designer of note. At their home at 12 Hammersmith Terrace, Cronyn met the likes of Edward Wadsworth, Mark Gertler, Leon Underwood and John Piper. Ceri Richards lived nearby, as did poets Robert Graves and Laura Riding in St Peter’s Square. He went on painting trips to Dorset with Julian Trevelyan, his neighbour at Durham Wharf, and to the French-Spanish border with Ray Coxon and Edna Ginese at the time of the Spanish Civil War. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Cronyn was commissioned into the Royal Navy. Put in charge of the Naval bomb disposal squad in Bristol dockyards, he was the first Canadian to be awarded the George Medal (GM). In 1942 he married Jean Harris and settled in Suffolk where from 1949-69 he was tutor of painting at Colchester School of Art teaching alongside John Nash, Edward Bawden, Carel Weight and Peter Coker (lot 174). From 1963 the Cronyns began to spend their summers in Quercy in the Lot, first renting a 15th century gatehouse and studio, then a small house, Les Vergers, before buying a dilapidated farmhouse in 1970 in Caufour which they renovated (lot 170). From 1974 the Cronyns spent the winter months in 3 St Peter’s Wharf, next door to Hammersmith Terrace, in one of the artists’ studios overlooking the Thames constructed by Julian Trevelyan. In his unpublished memoirs he recalls the landlord and his wife Arthur and Florrie with affection, the fun of the skittle alley, and the life surrounding St Peter’s Square, Hammersmith up to King Street and Chiswick (pre-construction of the A4 dual carriageway) – as being ‘like a small village’. Critic, humourist and politician A P Herbert (‘APH’) would hold court at the Black Lion every Sunday. It was through such gatherings that Cronyn met so many artists, writers and thinkers of the day. Ever the colourist, when the weather was poor in the Lot, Cronyn would take a painting trip south.         HUGH CRONYN (1905-1996) The Black Lion woodcut, unframed sheet:15.3 x 17.5 cm (6 x 6 3/4 in) PROVENANCE: Artist's Estate Executed circa 1939. Cronyn acquired his talent for wood engraving from his neighbour Gertrude Hermes when he first moved to 27A St Peter’s Square, Hammersmith in 1935. He subsequently moved to 9A Black Lion Lane, with the pub immediately opposite. In his unpublished memoirs he recalls the landlord and his wife Arthur and Florrie with affection, the skittle alley where he played frequently, and the life surrounding St Peter’s Square, Hammersmith up to King Street and Chiswick – pre-construction of the A4 dual carriageway – as being ‘like a small village’. The writer, humourist and politician AP Herbert (‘APH’) would hold court at the Black Lion every Sunday. It was through such gatherings that Cronyn met so many artists, writers and thinkers of the day.

        HUGH CRONYN (1905-1996) Hammersmith Mall signed and dated HUGH/CRONYN/37 (lower right), signed again and titled (on an artist label attached to the reverse) oil on canvas, unframed 51 x 61 cm (20 x 24 in) PROVENANCE: Artist's Estate The present work depicts the historic easterly end of Upper Mall, Hammersmith, leading to Dove’s Passage and its eponymous pub. Originally opened as a coffee house in the 18th century, The Dove is recognisable to the right of the composition from its cream pitched gable end, punctuated by a single window. To its right is 21 Upper Mall where the poet George Rostrevor Hamilton was living at the time. To its immediate left, at the end of Dove’s passage is 15 Upper Mall which once housed Doves Press, run by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker, and associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and William Morris, who had lived nearby at Kelmscott House. On the left of the composition are numbers 22, 20 (tucked away) and 18 Upper Mall.

        HUGH CRONYN (1905-1996) Jean Cronyn, the artist's wife signed HUGH CRONYN (lower right) oil on canvas, unframed 76 x 63.3 cm (30 x 24 3/4 in) PROVENANCE: Artist's estate Painted circa 1948, the present work depicts Jean Cronyn (née Harris; 1919-2003), the artist’s wife, when the couple were living in West Sussex with their two daughters, close to fellow artists and friends Raymond and Gin Coxon. Jean had met Cronyn in 1941 at one of AP Herbert’s gatherings at the Black Lion. At the time, fresh out of Oxford, she was working for the Board of Trade, while Cronyn was on leave from the Navy; they married the following year. Jean later became secretary to AP Herbert at 12 Hammersmith Terrace. Following Cronyn’s appointment as Tutor of Painting at Colchester School of Art in 1949 they moved to Suffolk. On the left of the composition is an early dish by the studio potter Michael Cardew (1901-83).

        HUGH CRONYN (1905-1996) Norah McGuinness signed and dated HUGH/CRONYN 37 (lower right), signed again and titled (on an artist label attached to the reverse) oil on canvas, unframed 61 x 51 cm (24 x 20 in) PROVENANCE: Artist's Estate The present work depicts Irish painter Norah McGuinness (1901-80), Cronyn’s friend and neighbour, just before her departure for New York. Painted from the entrance to Cronyn's studio at 9A Black Lion Lane, behind Norah is ‘Bell Steps’, 1a Hammersmith Terrace, where she lived, with its distinctive green door and the adjacent steps leading down to the Thames. To her right is The Black Lion, where she, Cronyn and other artists in Hammersmith and Chiswick congregated. Like Cronyn, McGuinness had attended classes in the studio of André Lhote in Paris. Back in London in the 1930s she became associated with Lucy Wertheims’s Gallery in Mayfair, and the London Group.

        HUGH CRONYN (1905-1996) Churchill's Funeral Barge signed and dated CRONYN/1965 (lower right), inscribed HAVENGORE/COMING UP TO FESTIVAL PIER (lower left) oil on canvas 76.4 x (30 x 50 in) PROVENANCE: Artist's Estate Painted in 1965, the present work depicts Havengore with Sir Winston Churchill’s coffin on deck, draped with the Union Jack on the day of his funeral: 30 th January 1965. Following the service at St Paul’s Cathedral that morning, Havengore bore Churchill’s coffin from the Tower of London up the Thames to the Festival Pier. From there his body was taken by train to its final resting place at St Martin’s Church, Bladon, close to Blenheim Palace. The first state funeral for a non-Royal for thirty years, at the time it was the largest and most watched event in history. Over 320,000 people queued to pay tribute whilst Churchill’s body lay in state in Westminster Hall for three days, 3,500 attended his funeral service at St Paul’s, and over 350 million tuned into the BBC to follow the occasion. During Havengore's journey up the Thames sixteen RAF fighter jets flew in formation over Churchills's coffin. Cronyn was both a lifelong lover of the Thames and an ardent supporter of Churchill. A keen yachtsman, he had lived by the Thames in Hammersmith and Chiswick in the 1930s and 40s. In the War he had served in the Royal Navy with distinction, was awarded a George Medal and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. On the day of the funeral, Cronyn secured a spot on the Embankment on the north side of the river, from where he looked across to the floating pier on the South Bank, with the Royal Festival Hall to the right. In the ensuing oil Cronyn captures the stately arrival of Havengore at Festival Pier escorted by two bobbing pilot boats. Above, silhouetted against the blue hoardings hiding the construction site of Queen Elizabeth Hall, is the heavy black form of the hearse to take Churchill’s coffin to the waiting train at Waterloo Station. Churchill’s widow, Lady Churchill memorably remarked to her youngest daughter at the end of what would surely have been an exhausting day for her: ‘It wasn’t a funeral, Mary – it was a triumph’, a note clearly borne out by the sense of celebration that Cronyn captures in the present vibrant depiction of this historic moment, despite the sobriety of the occasion.
