          William Crotch [1775 Norwich-1847 Taunton]- Cattle and a donkey grazing in parkland:- inscribed in pencil on the reverse 'Clare Hall' , said to be Mrs Sharpe's House, with the names of the cattle! and dated October 4th 1809 watercolour and pencil drawing 30 x 41cm, unframed. * Biography. Dr William Crotch was born in Norwich. He was a musical prodigy, performing at the age of four in London on the organ and piano, and by the age of 11 was at Cambridge studying music and became Professor of Music in 1797. He moved to London around 1810 and became the first Principal of The Royal Academy of Music. At the same time he was a talented amateur watercolour painter and etcher. His work is characterised by the under-painting of dark grey with light washes of limited colour on top. Many of these drawings were done at Windsor and Budleigh Salterton and Brighton while on holiday.

          Dr William Crotch (British, 1775-1847) A Portfolio of Views of Kingston Bridge, 1835; Seaton, 1837; Southdown Bicken or Cliffs to the West of Budleigh Salterton, Devon, 1833 (three); with three others watercolours by members of the Crotch family of Mr Ludlam's house, North End, Fulham, 1814; Putney Boathouse, 1814; and a country church, 1860 (various sizes) the first signed on the reverse "W Crotch, Aug 27 1835" and the others with various inscriptions watercolour h:21 w:28 cm Other Notes: William Crotch was a homo universalis or Renaissance man who excelled in a wide variety of fields, as composer, musician and artist. At the age of two and a half he could play God Save the King in full harmony on the piano. He was a pupil of the Oxford drawing master, John Malchair (1729-1812) and in 1803 he succeeded William Delamotte as Drawing Master at Oxford University. Dr Crotch met John Constable in 1806 and they became firm friends; their work from this period shows a mutual exchange of ideas and influences. Crotch's landscapes are in the Tate, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Ashmolean, Oxford.

By 11 he was studying music in Cambridge, two years later he settled in Oxford where he met J.B. Malchair. Appointed organist of Christchurch in 1790 until circa 1807. In 1797 he became a professor of music, moving to London circa 1810 becoming the first principal of the Royal Academy of Music.
