Isaac Robert Cruikshank (also known as Robert Cruikshank - British, 1789-1856). "The Shepherds" pencil and wash on paper, n.d. Signed at lower right. A drawing by Robert Cruikshank rendered in pencil and wash. The composition features two shepherds taking a rest among their flock of sheep. Please note: This work was exhibited in "Diverse Directions: A Collector's Choice: Selections from the Charles Craig Collection" at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art from December 12, 1987 until February 7, 1988. A charming example of Robert Cruikshank's draftmanship mounted in a custom frame behind glass. Size (sight view): 6.7" L x 8.375" W (17 cm x 21.3 cm) Size (frame): 16.1" L x 20.1" W (40.9 cm x 51.1 cm) About the artist: "Born in London, Isaac Robert Cruikshank was an illustrator, caricaturist and portrait painter. He was the older, but less well-known, brother of George Cruikshank who was also an illustrator and caricaturist for the likes of Charles Dickens. Isaac began making caricatures seriously in around 1818-9, when the fashion for dandified dressing became popular. This form of fashion was particularly easy to caricature and between 1820 and 1827, Cruikshank made around 400 images. In the late 1820s he also illustrated several books, many of them sequels, and in 1827 the two brothers collaborated on a series of 'London Characters'. After 1830, Isaac's productivity diminished and his health deteriorated dramatically in the late-1840s. In 1856 he caught bronchitis and died."
