Condition A-: small repaired tears at lower left edge, with brown tape on verso; minor creases and abrasions in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. In 1947, a large series of posters was commissioned and produced by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and printed by Loxley Brothers, in Sheffield. The artists involved in the project included Manfred Reiss, Thomas Eckersley, Abram Games, Desmond Moore, and the lesser-known Cusden.

    ARTIST: LEONARD CUSDEN (1898-1979) SIZE: 25 1/8 x 40 in./64 x 102 cm PRINTER: British India Press Offset, Bombay DESCRIPTION: Using flat, broad swaths of color, Cusden delivers the vibrancy and allure of Fatehpur Sikri, the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571-1585. Known as the City of Victory, it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. As the first planned city of the Mughals, it boasts excellently preserved examples of palaces, public buildings, and mosques constructed in red sandstone and reflecting an amalgamation of indigenous and Persian style. Here, we catch a glimpse of the Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India. Among its many wonderful architectural features, it can host an astounding 25,000 people in its courtyard.     LEONARD CUSDEN (1898-1979) SEE INDIA / FATEHPUR SIKRI. Circa 1930. 40x25 1/2 inches, 101 1/2x64 3/4 cm. British India Press, Bombay. Condition B / B+: tears, repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges; archival tape on verso. Paper. A bright, bold image using broad areas of flat color, (a style frequently associated with Tom Purvis and Henry George Gawthorn), of Fatehpur Sikri, the City of Victory. Built in the second half of the 16th century, the city was the capital of the Mughal Empire for ten years. Built with local red sandstone, the city, now a World Heritage Site, is considered a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. Pictured looming over the city is the Buland Darwaza, Blind Gate, a triumphal arch constructed in 1575. Cusden also designed posters for the LNER and the GWR railways in Britain.
