The Chanukah candelabra is traditionally used on the occasion of the Jewish Hanukkah festival. The term was coined at the end of the 19th century in Jerusalem. The present bank-shaped menorah by the Polish artist Samuel Cygler (1898-1943) dates from around 1930 and consists of several marble parts. On the back wall there is an engraved Decalogue - the Ten Commandments - with applied brass half-crowns above it. On the rectangular base are mounted two lions looking at each other. Behind it stands a marble bridge with the 'servant', a small oil vessel to ignite the candles. At the front edge are mounted eight candle holders. The Chanukah candelabra is in good condition with light wear. A corner shows a restored breaking point. The dimensions, when assembled, are 42 x 46 x 24 cm. Samuel Cygler (1898-1943) The Polish artist Samuel Cygler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. In 1920, he went to Hamburg to study at the art school. He learned different printing techniques. In 1921, he returned to the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. From 1923, he studied figurative painting, graphics, anatomy and perspective. Cygler was especially known for his graphic works. Until 1921, he was a member of the artist group 'Young Idysz', joining the young Jewish artist in Poland.
