      Władysław Czachórski

      Est: €120,000 - €150,000

(Grabowczyk 1850–1911 Munich) Young flower seller, signed Czachorski, oil on canvas, 40 x 29 cm, framed Provenance: Sale, Sotheby’s, London, 11 June 2012, Lot 22; Private Collection, Austria. Compare: Henryk Piatkowski, Wl. Czachorski. Monografje artystyczne tom XI, Warsaw 1927, „Marchande des fleurs“. The Polish painter Władysław Czachórski (Ladislaus von Czachorski) is a representative of the Munich School. He began his artistic education in 1866/1867, in the drawing class taught by the Polish history painter Rafał Hadziewicz (1803-1883). Afterwards, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Art in 1868 before heading to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts from 1869 to 1873, where became a pupil of Hermann Anschutz, Alexander Wagner and Karl von Piloty. He undertook study trips to Italy and France between 1874 and 1877, before settling in Munich in 1879. There he soon established himself as portrait painter favoured by the city’s wealthy bourgeoisie and ran a successful studio until his death. His oeuvre encompasses genre scenes, portraits and still lifes, as well as scenes taken from literature, history and drama. His pictures of Shakespearean dramas are characterised by the naturalistic rendering of female figures in period costumes. The present lot depicts a young lady in profile holding a basket of splendid flowers in her hands and is an impressive demonstration of Czachórski's masterly skills. The softness of her skin is almost palpable and contrasts with the coolness of her pearl necklace. With a dreamy gaze she wanders into the distance while proudly presenting a basket of roses and carnations, intended for sale. The sitter is shown with photographic precision and her gaze also invites the viewer to dream along.

    • Czachórski, Ladislaus von: Dreaming Girl
      Nov. 19, 2020

      Czachórski, Ladislaus von: Dreaming Girl

      Est: €80,000 - €120,000

Czachórski, Ladislaus von 1850 Grabowczyk/Lublin - 1911 Munich Oil on canvas. 36 x 57cm. Signed and dated lower right: Czachorski 1896. Framed. Provenance: Private collection, Europe. The gaze of the \"dreaming girl\", who seems to look through the viewer, captivates in a completely different way than the both paintings by Eugen von Blaas (Lot 1195, Lot 1196). One can observe her \"unnoticed\", as it were, and enjoy every detail of this fascinatingly haptically painted painting - the image in front of her inner eye, however, remains the secret of the dreamer. The young lady had certainly sat upright on the upholstery with a sloping backrest at first to complete the rich embroidery with needle and thread, which she holds in her lap. Now the young body has slid forward on the seat, her head rests on the edge of the backrest and she dreams with her eyes open, the needle still in her hand. The result is a charming, light, diagonal arch in various shades of pink, cream and white against the dark green of the tapestry in the background and the seat cushion. This light play of colours is taken up by the lush bouquet of flowers in the upper right-hand corner of the image and by a white flowering houseplant in the lower left-hand corner. The painter of this painting, the Polish-born Ladislaw Czachorski, is convincing in composition and content with his fascinating technique, which proves him to be a grandmaster of history painting of his time. In this small painting he shows that he is not inferior in quality to his teacher, the great Carl von Piloty. Czachorsky, who was born in Poland, came to Munich after his first training in Warsaw with a stopover at the Dresden Academy. Here he became a student of Piloty, who influenced the Munich art scene and especially history painting. Besides genre paintings and portraits Czachorski also specialised in Shakespearean scene motifs. Already at a young age Czachorski was celebrated by the public and critics, e.g. in 1879 he received a gold medal for a Hamlet painting at the 2nd International Art Exhibition in Munich's Glass Palace. His portraits of young ladies, often in historical costumes and in richly decorated boudoirs, were so popular with buyers that they had to wait up to two years to receive a work by the artist. Even today's viewer of the \"dreaming girl\", \"saturated\" with completely different viewing habits, can experience this fascination when the eye revels in the tactile promise the artist makes with the delicate execution of the most varied materials presented side by side. Czachorski devotes the same attention to the surface design of all the details in the image and is closely related to Eugen de Blaas in this respect. The gaze of the young dreamer leaves the viewer alone with all the splendour, but is able to make him feel the all too human feeling of daydreaming, removed from time. (Lublin 1850–1911 Munich) Portrait of a Girl with Laurel Wreath, signed Czachorski, on the reverse an old handwritten label with title, oil on canvas, 34 x 27.5 cm, framed Provenance: Galerie Helbing, Munich, 18 May 1903, lot 17; European Private Collection; Bukowski, Stockholm, 26 November 1997, lot 229; European Private Collection. The Polish painter Władysław Czachórski (Ladislaus von Czachorski) is a representative of the Munich School. He began his artistic education in 1866/1867, in the drawing class taught by the Polish history painter Rafał Hadziewicz (1803-1883). He mainly painted genre scenes, portraits and still lifes, as well as images from literature, history and drama. His pictures of Shakespearean dramas are characterised by the naturalistic rendering of female figures in 18th-century costumes. This lot is one of Czachórski’s extraordinary paintings and shows a girl with a laurel wreath, looking upwards in a reverie. The fabric that drapes the girl’s arm is masterfully rendered, as are the leaves of the laurel wreath. The sitter is depicted with photographic precision, with her gaze inviting the viewer to join her in her dreaming.

      Est: £12,000 - £18,000

signed and dated Czachorski. 1873. l.r. oil on canvas PROVENANCE Kurt Gluckselig Antiques, New York Purchased from the above by the present owners in June 1986 CATALOGUE NOTE The European success of Czachorski's work resulted from the universality of his subjects and his excellent workmanship. Alongside Jozef Brandt and Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski (see lots 45, 46 & 47) he was the most acknowledged and popular representative of the Polish artistic colony in Munich at the turn of the nineteenth century. He became a master at depicting stylised intimate drawing-room scenes in which his beautiful heroines awaited their darlings, absorbed in love letters, contemplating the beauty of jewels or flowers, or looking out of windows pensively. Within these compositions Czachorski paid particular attention to the depiction of rich fabrics, such as tapestries, carpets, curtains, and the silk or velvety shimmer of his sitters dresses. Painted in 1873, the present work predates a larger composition featuring the same sitter in a similar pose entitled Czy chcesz róze?, now in the collection of the Lwowska Galeria Sztuki, by six years. For an illustration of the latter work see Jerzy Malinowski, Malarstwo polskie XIX wieku, Warsaw, 2003, p. 206, no. 12, illustrated in black and white.
