Follower of Pietro da Cortona,  Italian 1596-1669-  The Rape of the Sabine Women; and Alexander the Great receiving the family of Darius;  each oil on canvas fragment, each bears ink stamp for the National Gallery of Prague 'Narodni Galerie, vývoz' ('National Gallery, export') verso, the first 60 x 47.5 cm., the second 59.5 x 47 cm., two (2)., (both unframed).  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Several of the figure groups in the first composition, 'The Rape of the Sabines', appear to have been inspired by Pietro da Cortona’s rendition of the subject, which is in the collection of the Pinacoteca Capitolina, Rome [no.PC 137]. Throughout his career, da Cortona also painted several scenes from the life of Alexander the Great, illustrating the historical subject’s popularity with the artist, his followers, and their patrons. The scene here, with the family of Darius before the tent of Alexander, also features in a fresco cycle painted by da Cortona and his pupils at the Palazzo Pitti, Florence.

RAUB DER SABINERINNEN Öl auf Leinwand. 182 x 243 cm. Ohne Rahmen (schmale Leiste). A.R. (1360451) (11) Pietro da Cortona, 1596 Cortona – 1669 Rome, school of THE RAPE OF THE SABINE WOMEN Oil on canvas. 182 x 243 cm. Unframed.

OIL PAINTING ATT. TO PIETRO DA CORTONA

    Est: €40,000 - €60,000

PIETRO DA CORTONA (1596 - 1669) Workshop of. Virgin with Child and St. Martina

    Est: €2,000 - €3,000

PIETRO DA CORTONA (1596 - 1669). Workshop of. Virgin with Child and St. Martina. This composition has been repeatedly taken up by Pietro da Cortona and his workshop, for a total of at least eight versions, made on different supports, of which the work of the same subject preserved in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia seems to have been the reference model. The body of the saint was found in an apparently casual way in the Roman church dedicated to S. Martina and S. Luca in 1643 and it was an event that greatly affected the popular sentiment of the time, increasing the cult and interest in her figure: hence the strong demand for works that depicted the saint, in whose number this painting is inserted, attributable to the hand of one of the artists who formed the workshop of Pietro da Cortona in those years. Provenance: Private collection, Massachusetts. Likely a study for the fresco of the same subject in the Sala di Apollo, Palazzo Pitti, Florence. Commissioned from Pietro da Cortona by Grand Duke Ferdinand II de' Medici, the decoration of the Sala di Apollo went through a long gestation. Begun in 1642-43, when the artist designed and frescoed the figures from the main group (Apollo, Ferdinand II, Fame and Hercules), it was left unfinished upon his departure for Rome in 1647. Responding belatedly to the Grand Duke's persistent requests to continue the work, twelve years later, in the fall of 1659, Cortona sent his best pupil Ciro Ferri, who completed the frescoes with the aid of drawings and cartoons executed by his master in Rome.

    Jun. 05, 2021

Old Master, Giovanni Battista Langetti (1635–1676), Drunken Noah

    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

Langetti came from Rome, first studied with Gioacchino Assereto (1600-1649) in Genoa, then with Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669) in Rome and with Giovanni Francesco Cassana (1611-1691) in Venice. He merged diverse influences in his work, but above all by Ribera and Caravaggio. Langetti often represented male nudes in his works, which are characterized by a mature or older age and an energetic life. He found his artistic specialization in depicting the aging of the body with expressive realism and in heroic or tragic characters. This is also shown by the painting with the drunkenness of Noah: Noah's son Ham discovers his drunken father bared and tells his brothers Sem and Japhet. These two cover his nakedness without looking at him. We see in the picture how Ham scolds his sleeping father with his index finger while the other two brothers solve the problem with decency. When Noah later found out about it, he cursed Ham's son and his descendants. Langetti has characterized the aged epidermis with virtuosity and a keen sense for the materiality of the color and how it stretches over the bones and tendons of the aged man. Giovanni Bellini first presented the topic in a dramatic close-up (Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archeologie de Besançon). Langetti also treated elongated male nudes in other paintings, The Good Samaritan (Padua, private collection) or Cain flee after the murder of Abel (Nîmes, Musée des Beaux-Arts). Mattia Vinco dated the painting around 1670. Expert opinion by doc. Mattia Vinco, 24 March 2018

Pietro Berrettini detto Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596 - Roma 1669), Ercole e Onfale

    Est: €20,000 - €30,000
