Churchill, Winston | My Early Life, inscribed to David Lloyd George

    Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Churchill, Winston My Early Life: A Roving Commission. London: Thornton Butterworth, 1930 8vo. Original wine-colored cloth, gilt-lettered and blind stamped; spine sunned. Collector's clamshell box. First edition, first state. A presentation copy inscribed by the author to David Lloyd George. From a future Prime Minister to the ex-Prime Minister, this extraordinary presentation copy was given by Churchill to a man he revered and referred to constantly. In his obituary tribute in the House of Commons in 1945, Churchill called Lloyd George “the greatest Welshman which that unconquerable race has produced since the age of the Tudors.” Churchill had worked under Lloyd George during World War One and asked Lloyd George to work for him in his War Cabinet during World War Two. Violet Bonham Carter wrote that Lloyd George's “was the only personal leadership I have ever known Winston to accept unquestioningly in his whole political career.”  A fine, bright copy. • Dodo Bird Head & Feet

    Dodo Bird Head & Feet

    Est: $100 - $300

This first edition lithograph is from George Robert Gray's The Genera of Birds: Comprising their generic characters,a notice of the habits of each genus, and an extensive list of species, referred to their several genera. David William Mitchell illustrated the work. The lithographs were completed by the noted Charles Hullmandel who also worked with John Gould. The work was published in London by Longman, Brown, Green, & Longmans between 1844 and 1849. The anatomical plates of bird heads are of special interest as it is the first published work of Joseph Wolf. Wolf was an exceedingly talented artist and his draugtsmanship is equal to the color plates. Gray was the curator of the British Museum’s bird collections from 1831 until his death in 1871. He produced the extensive work, The Genera of Birds, in 50 parts between 1844 and 1849. He described over 8,000 species and made extensive effort to include species from all available sources. It is thus considered one of the most elemental works on 19th century ornithology.
