His art at first consisted simply of works he whittled out of pieces of scrap wood he found in alleys or on the street. He then added such materials as chicken bones and driftwood. His most frequent early carvings were totem pole stacks of faces. In later years he added painting to his body of work. He is in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and The American Folk Art Museum, among many others.

  • William Dawson Painting Colorful Bird Outsider Artist
    Feb. 10, 2022

William Dawson Painting Colorful Bird Outsider Artist

    Est: $800 - $1,200

William Dawson (American, 1901-1990). Acrylic on board painting of a colorful bird, 1985. Signed & dated on lower right. A beautiful painting of a colorful bird in its natural habitat by Outsider Artist William Dawson. Most fascinating is Dawson's liberated interpretation of scale. Note how larger-than-life the avian is as compared to the river and foliage in its environs. Born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1901, William Dawson grew up on his grandfather's horse farm where he developed a great appreciation for nature and all its creatures. Interestingly, Dawson moved to Chicago in 1923 where he worked as a manager of operations for EE Aron Company, and only began making art - both paintings and sculptures - when he retired, following his 35 year career with that company. Dawson is admired for his Naïve portraits, totemic sculptures, and renderings of animals like this example. Size of sight view: 20" L x 15" W (50.8 cm x 38.1 cm) Size: 20" L x 16.625" W (50.8 cm x 42.2 cm) Size of frame: 21.625" L x 16.625" W (54.9 cm x 42.2 cm) According to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, "William Dawson grew up on a farm in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1923 he moved to Chicago, where he worked in a wholesale food market for almost forty years. After he retired, he took painting and ceramics classes at a Chicago senior center. He was bored, however, and started carving figures, animals, and totems from discarded pieces of furniture. He got up at five in the morning to work on his sculptures, and would make a new piece every day. Eventually, his wife persuaded him to move some of his pieces out of the house and he took them to a local library. The library agreed to exhibit his work, and the entire show sold out." Dawson and his art became internationally known when he was featured as part of the 1982 travelling exhibition "Black Folk Art in America 1930-1980," originating at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. In fact, Dawson took First Lady Nancy Reagan's arm at the show's opening and personally guided her through the exhibition.
