ROBIN DAY (1915-2010) & LUCIENNE DAY (1917-2010) for HILLE . 661D chair, c. 1950. Wood, metal and fabric. Measurements: 74 x 47 x 51 cm. This chair was designed by the English designer couple Robin and Lucienne Day and edited by Hille for the Royal Festival Hall in 1950. This design is part of a rare series produced especially for the orchestra of this famous London hall. Its light, visible slimness allows for easy seating for costumed performers. Furniture designer Robin Day and textile designer Lucienne Day occupy a unique place in the history of 20th century design. For nearly seven decades they pursued careers independent of each other, and both made outstanding contributions to British design. Robin and Lucienne Day were a celebrated pair in the post-war British design world, but each carved his own career and his own path in design independently.
