            Est: $400 - $600

Julio De Diego (New York / California / Spain, 1900 - 1979) untitled, 1947 mixed media on paper signed lower right. Julio De Diego was born on May 9, 1900 in Madrid, Spain. When he was a boy of fifteen in Madrid, he already knew he wanted to be an artist, but his father, a wholesale and retail merchant, objected. Father insisted that Julio and Julio's brother should aim for business success. When his father destroyed all his drawings, Julio left the house for good, and true to the romantic pattern of art biographies, became a successful painter. His brother inherited the business, gambled it away and killed himself. Before De Diego came to the United States at the age of twenty-four, he had been an apprentice in a scene-painting studio for Madrid theatres and was an extra in the Ballet Russe's performance of "Petrouchka" with the great Nijinsky. For two years he was with the Spanish army, and fought six months in the North African Riff wars. In 1926 he arrived in Chicago where he designed magazine covers, did fashion illustrations and got a commission to decorate two chapels in St. Gregory's Church. He also designed a laundry bag for the Hotel Sherman that led to a considerable increase in outgoing wash. He painted street scenes, landscapes and murals for the WPA. He was a gaunt, intense man, who was at one time married to Gypsy Rose Lee. As an artist, he fits into no easy pigeonhole. He was far from what is commonly considered to be the mainstream of modern art. He was a traditionalist at heart, but his fame came from his paintings of the Spanish Armada. In his New York studio, de Diego spent his spare time cooking aromatic Spanish dishes and reading works of Spanish philosophers and poets. He smoked cigarettes constantly and dressed flamboyantly, affecting cerise mufflers and jangling bracelets. Compiled and submitted August 2004 by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Julio de Diego (1900 - 1979) Spanish, Watercolor

            Est: $400 - $800

This is an abstract watercolor by Julio de Diego, a Spanish artist who was far from the mainstream of modern art. He was born in Madrid and wanted to be an artist even in his teens, but his father objected and destroyed all his drawings, so Julio left home for good at fifteen. He worked in a Madrid studio that produced scenery for operas and appeared as an extra in a ballet production starring the great Najinsky. He enlisted in the Spanish cavalry to fight in the Rif Wars against the Berbers in Morocco, then emigrated to Chicago, where he designed magazine covers, did fashion illustrations, and decorated the interiors of a church. During the Depression, he painted street scenes, landscapes, and murals for the WPA. In 1946 he married Gypsy Rose Lee, settled in California, and eventually moved to Sarasota, Florida, where he died in 1979. He was known as a visual artist, and you can see that in the watercolor here. There are three couples wearing colorful costumes, they appear to be exaggerated mod figures, and they all have a Spanish flair. The title is "To have plenty is to be confused” and it seems like de Diego is poking fun at people through sexual imagery. The watercolor is signed in the image in the lower right, and the overall size is 8 1/2 x 11 3/8 in. wide.

Julio de Diego (1900 ? 1979) was a Spanish-born American artist. Born in Madrid, Spain, at the age of 15 he left home after his domineering father destroyed "every drawing in the house." Shortly thereafter, his art was exhibited for the first time in a show at a casino, where he sold his first painting. During this period, Diego also worked in a Madrid studio that produced scenery for opera productions. He appeared as an extra in the production by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes of Stravinsky's Petrushka, starring Vaslav Nijinsky. He also served as art director for Spain's first four-reel film, in which he also played the villain. While still in his teens, Diego enlisted in the Spanish cavalry. He served with the Spanish forces for two years, including a six-month stint in the Rif War. Diego reported that he was wounded by an enemy saber during the Riff campaign. After the war, Diego cut off contact with his family and traveled to Paris, where he was exposed to the latest in Cubism, Abstraction, and Surrealism. One of his first jobs in the United States was designing scenery in Tampa, Florida for the touring Broadway show "Wild Cat." In 1926, Diego started to focus more on painting, and began to garner awards. It was also in 1926 that Diego moved to Chicago. Diego first exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1929. In this same year he started to participate at the various Annual American Exhibitions, Chicago Artists Exhibitions, and International Water Color Exhibitions. he was married to Gypsy Rose Lee. Offered here is an original lithograph from the rare 1958 "Improvisations" portfolio, published by the Artists Equity Association of New York. Leading artists on the New York art scene were invited to contribute original lithographs in the form of advertisements for businesses and institutions supporting the Artists Equity Association; these sponsors allowed the artists complete creative freedom of expression. This lithograph was issued in an edition of 2000; the sheet measures approx. 12 x 8-1/2 inches. flush. Condition: top & bottom nicks at the edges.
