Carlos de Haes Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1829 - d. 1898

Carlos Sebastián Pedro Hubert de Haes (January 25, 1829 – June 17, 1898) was a Spanish painter from Belgium.[1] He was noted for the Realism in his landscapes, and was considered to be the "first contemporary Spanish artist able to capture something of a particularly Spanish 'essence' in his work".[2] He was cited along with Jenaro Perez Villaamil and Aureliano de Beruete as one of the three Spanish grand masters of landscape painting, the latter of which was his pupil.[3]

In the 1850s, Haes was involved in the rise of the Realist school of landscape. Coincidentally his landscape and wildlife paintings of the Monasterio de Piedra occurred at the time of an academic opening for the Painting School of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, the selection to be made by a landscape competition. In 1857 he became the first professor of landscape painting, the first in Spain to teach painting directly from nature. In 1860, he became an Academic at the Royal Academy. In 1876, he presented at the National Exhibition with La Canal de Mancorbo en los Picos de Europa ("The Canal of Mancorbo in the Picos de Europa") later acquired by the Spanish state to be part of the collection of the Museo del Prado, because of its significance as a realistic Spanish landscape painting.

Oil on canvas, measurements: 90 x 116 cm. (Brussels, 1826-Madrid, 1898). Painter of Belgian origin. A crisis in the family economy forced the Haes to move to Spain. He settled in Malaga in 1835, where after a few years he began his artistic journey with the academic painter Luis de la Cruz. In 1850, he decided to continue his training in his native land studying the great Flemish landscape masters, at the same time establishing contact with the European avant-garde that gathered in Brussels around the renowned annual exhibitions at the Salons of the Belgian capital. . His training alongside the landscape painter Joseph Quinaux determined his encounter with plein air painting to which he devoted himself with passion and defined his artistic production in its entirety. With this background, he returned to Spain, presented himself and won, in the first edition of the National Exhibitions, in 1856, a third medal with landscapes taken around the Belgian capital, which opened a gap and breathed life into the archaic and academic structure. of Spanish landscaping. The coincidence in time of the attraction exerted in Haes by the discovery of the places and wild nature around the Monasterio de Piedra and the call for opposition to the landscape plaza of the Higher School of Painting of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, which had been left vacant due to the premature death of its owner, Fernando Ferrant y Llausás, determined his permanence in Spain and his definitive establishment by obtaining in 1857 the aforementioned chair from which, throughout his teaching, he would train in the practice of outdoor painting to an entire generation of landscapers. Parallel to his teaching, he continued with his artistic production, and in 1858 he obtained his first medal at the National Exhibition. Provenance: important Andalusian private collection.

It has some faults in the polychromy and a small circular hole. Measurements: 26 x 34 cm; 49 x 56 cm (frame). The Haes family moved from Brussels to Spain in 1835, specifically to Malaga, where Carlos began his training as a disciple of Luis de la Cruz. In 1850 he decided to continue his studies in his native land, learning from the great Flemish landscape painters. At the same time he came into contact with contemporary Belgian artists who exhibited regularly at the Brussels Salons. Once there he worked with the landscape painter Joseph Quinaux, who introduced him to plein air painting, a key to the formation of his artistic personality. On his return to Spain Haes began to reap success, such as the third medal at the National Exhibition of 1856. The following year he was appointed professor of landscape painting at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, a position from which he trained a whole generation of landscape painters in the practice of realist plein air painting. His pupils were Aureliano Beruete and Darío de Regoyos. During his artistic career he continued to win prizes, such as the first medal at the National Exhibition of 1858. In 1860 he was appointed a member of the San Fernando Academy, the same year he won another first medal at the National Exhibition. Nevertheless, he cannot be considered a follower of Plenilism, as he was in favour of working only the sketches from life, while he considered that the painting should be finished in the classical manner, in the studio. Nevertheless, he introduced landscape painting into Spanish painting, to the extent that the first chair of landscape painting at the San Fernando Academy was created for him. His views are composed in the classical manner, albeit with a predominance of the earth over the sky, which normally occupies a third of the canvas. Haes considered landscape to be a genre for connoisseurs, as it is difficult to treat and understand. He argued that the aim of art was the truth to be found in the faithful imitation of nature, for which the painter had to have a profound knowledge of nature and not allow himself to be carried away by his imagination. This is why he preferred to finish his works in the studio, in order to capture the concrete moment, since nature itself is constantly changing. Artistic genius lies not only in technique, but in the painter's own personal way of contemplating nature. Most of Carlos de Haes's work is in the Prado Museum, although he is also represented in the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao, Malaga, Valencia and Lleida, in the Jaime Moreda Foundation and in the National Gallery in London.

Mountainous landscape divided in two by a torrent or stream that flows into the foreground, thus forming an axis with the mountain that dominates the horizon of the composition. This structure was common to many of the artist's paintings. This is a large, meticulously finished studio work, which makes it quite different stylistically and technically from the numerous sketch sketches that the artist made from life and which he used to compose works like the present one. From the technical characteristics it could be said that the work belongs to the artist's second stage, between 1870 and 1880, when he clarified his palette more and used a looser technique, offering a wealth of chromatic nuances and soft contrasts of light, playing with variations in colour. The work has certain similarities with the painting "Peña de Rodrigo" which belongs to the collection of the Prado Museum in Madrid. LXXX, 318, 2007. p. 180. It has repainting on the pictorial surface. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 89 x 116 cm; 141 x 113 cm (frame). The composition of this work is largely reminiscent of the painting by Carlos de Haes entitled "Mountains of Asturias", belonging to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, although the vertical format of the latter greatly reduces the horizontal panoramic view with respect to the one we are dealing with, but both views have a similar structure, with the added affinity of the way of composing the sky in each of the pieces. The aforementioned similarity can be seen if we compare this work with the general sketch that served as the compositional basis for the painting entitled "French Pyrenees", where we can see the same type of pictorial order marked by a clear foreground that opens out towards a rocky, rugged background where nature is shown in all its splendour. The Haes family moved from Brussels to Spain in 1835, specifically to Malaga, where Carlos began his training as a pupil of Luis de la Cruz. CARLOS DE HAES (Brussels, 1829 - Madrid, 1898). "Lake Landscape of Vriesland (Holland)". Charcoal and pastel on paper. Work reproduced in Archivo Español de Arte. Institute of History CSIC. LXXVIII, 311, 2005. p. 303. With repainting on the pictorial surface. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 74 x 107.5 cm; 110 x 143 cm (frame). It is a splendid drawing of good dimensions, which makes it even more singular. It represents a lake landscape on a stormy day. It is one of those rare works by Haes in which we could say that the protagonist is not the landscape itself, but the sensation of the storm which, masterfully captured by the painter, he has depicted for us, with great realism, in the composition. It is more difficult to convey an atmospheric sensation through drawing than through oil or watercolour, but Haes fully succeeds here, making the protagonist the meteorological phenomenon itself, the atmospheric sensation of a stormy day. And all this, with no colour other than the monochrome provided by a charcoal pencil and a few touches of white gouache in the centre to enliven the reflection of the fading light on the water. The drawing is truly beautiful and exemplifies the great quality he possessed as a draughtsman, detailing in the foreground the different types of bushes on the banks with precise, perfect strokes, as well as masterfully blurring the forms as they are lost in the charged atmosphere of the distance. But these technical details would be no more than beautiful, static, mute elements, were it not for the enormous life they acquire under the dense atmosphere that preludes the storm, admirably captured by the painter's pencil. It would be difficult to pinpoint exactly, as this is a drawing, to which period or period of Haes's oeuvre it belongs. However, in view of the flat, lakeside landscape, full of vegetation and rainy weather, we can say that it must undoubtedly be a landscape of Belgium, Holland or northern France, painted by Haes on one of the artistic excursions he made to these countries during his lifetime. And if we add to this the fact that the third and final stage of Haes's creation The Haes family moved from Brussels to Spain in 1835, specifically to Malaga, where Carlos began his training as a pupil of Luis de la Cruz. In 1850 he decided to continue his studies in his native land, learning from the great Flemish landscape painters.
