    • ELMYR DE HORY (Budapest, 1906 - Ibiza, 1976). "Landscape". Mixed media on paper. Signed in the lower left corner.
      Dec. 12, 2024

ELMYR DE HORY (Budapest, 1906 - Ibiza, 1976). "Landscape". Mixed media on paper. Signed in the lower left corner.

      Est: €2,000 - €2,500

ELMYR DE HORY (Budapest, 1906 - Ibiza, 1976). "Landscape". Mixed media on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 45 x 54 cm; 62 x 71 cm (frame). Elmyr de Hory, born Elémer Albert Hoffmann, was a famous Hungarian painter and forger, author of more than a thousand false works and protagonist of the book "Fake", by Clifford Irving. He also appeared in the documentary "F for Fake" (1974) by Orson Welles. More than a forger, De Hory was a master at imitating the styles of famous painters. In fact, he painted the pictures but did not sign them, his dealer being the one who imitated the signatures of the masters. He would begin to sign his own name when his fame as a forger was already quoted. His biography is confusing, since he himself falsified it, adding fantastic data such as an alleged aristocratic origin. He trained at the Heinmann Academy in Munich and in 1926 he moved to Paris, where he entered the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, having Fernand Léger as his teacher. He later returned to his native Hungary, where he ended up in prison for political reasons. Released during World War II, he was imprisoned again in just one year. He managed to escape and return to Paris, where he discovered his ability to imitate the style of notable artists. He then began to sell Picasso reproductions as originals, and soon began to create original work following the style of different authors, rather than reproducing existing works. In 1946 De Hory travels with a dealer to South America, selling his fake works, and later settles in the United States, first between Los Angeles and New York and later in Miami. During these years he tries to make a living with his own original work, but finds no market for it and is forced to focus on the fake pieces. In 1959 he returned to Paris and resumed his association with Fernand Legros, a dealer with whom he had already worked in America. In 1962 he moved definitively to Ibiza, from where he continued to send his works to Legros, in exchange for a monthly salary. Some dealers and experts then began to detect his forgeries, which led to an investigation by Interpol. Eventually his dealers, Legros and Lessard, were imprisoned for fraud, while De Hory was on the run in Australia. Finally, tired, he returned to Spain, where he was convicted in 1968. However, he was never charged with forgery, mainly for lack of evidence.

PORTRAIT OF MAJOR WELCH BY NOTED FORGER ELMYR DE HORY ELMYR DE HORY (1906 - 1976) Hungarian-born painter and art forger, who is said to have sold over a thousand forgeries to reputable art galleries all over the world. His forgeries garnered celebrity from a Clifford Irving book, "Fake" (1969); a documentary essay film by Orson Welles, "F for Fake" (1974); and a biography by Mark Forgy, "The Forger''s Apprentice: Life with the World''s Most Notorious Artist" (2012). Oil-on-canvas portrait, 19 1/2" x 25" (sight), a chest-up depiction of a British Major of the Royal Fusiliers, named as Frank Welch on a brass plaque affixed to the bottom edge of the frame. The upper right corner of the canvas bears the artist''s signature "Hory 1947" in black paint, along with the French dedication "a l''ami Welch". De Hory, while only passingly successful as an artist in his own right, would garner international infamy for his skilled forgeries of the works of such artists as Pablo Picasso, Auguste Renoir, Amadeo Modigliani, and Henri Matisse, although his relationships with a series of shady art dealers and agents kept him from becoming wealthy. He would eventually be arrested by Spanish authorities and commit suicide to avoid extradition to France. His forgeries are highly sought-after collectibles in their own right, and his honest works are scarce. Shows a few minor surface abrasions, else very good. Also present is a period portrait photo of Major Welch, 8" x 10", bearing the stamp of noted American portrait photographer Fabian Bachrach at lower right. Two pieces.

Elmyr de Hory (Hungarian, 1906-1979) BATEAU SUR LE LAC DANS UN PAYSAGE (manner of Pierre Auguste Renoir) pastel, framed, bearing facsimile signature: Renoir H14 1/2" W20 1/2" Provenance: Bonhams-London, April 2, 1990 "Thirty Masterpieces" by Elmyr de Hory, Lot 13 South Carolina private collection Literature: Irving, Clifford. FAKE: THE STORY OF ELMYR DE HORY, THE GREATEST ART FORGER OF OUR TIME. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1969. Other Notes: In 1952, Elmyr de Hory returned to Los Angeles after a prosperous sojourn in Dallas, Texas, managing to sell some of his stash of alleged masterpieces, including some Picasso and Matisse drawings. He had made a huge profit and was hoping he would be equally successful in Southern California. Elymr had set up an appointment with art dealer Frank Perls, owner of a well-known Beverly Hills gallery, and he planned to unload more of his artworks for another sizeable profit. Elmyr dressed in his best suit for the occasion, carrying with him a large portfolio. At his meeting with Perls, Elmyr presented what he claimed were drawings he inherited from his family following World War II. The portfolio purportedly included sketches from Picasso, Matisse, Renoir and Modigliani. Perls took one look at the works and was immensely impressed. After all, it''s not often that one has the chance to hold great masterpieces by some of the world''s most famous artists. However, the longer Perls looked at the pictures the more concerned he became. It was clear that something was wrong and Perls'' worrisome expression discomforted Elymr. According to Clifford Irving''s book "Fake!" Perls questioned Elmyr about his address and other detailed personal information, causing Elmyr''s nervousness to grow. Perls then calmly placed the pictures back into the portfolio, tied the strings, and then suddenly threw the mat at Elmyr. Elmyr was shocked by the unexpected action and was uncertain what to do next until Perls ordered him to get out. Elmyr then walked out of the gallery with Perls yelling behind him. Perls observed what an untrained eye would likely never notice: these works were clearly fakes. It was also true that they were created masterfully. To Perls'' surprise, Elmyr asked, after being thrown out of the gallery, whether Perls thought the drawings were well done. According to Irving, Perls replied, "They certainly fooled me for a few minutes," before ordering the counterfeiter away again. The incident was not Elmyr''s first or last time at trying to sell excellent forgeries. In fact, he had been doing it successfully for years. Unbeknownst to Frank Perls, Elmyr had sold some forgeries to Perls'' brother Klaus in New York several years earlier. Elmyr''s involvement with the Perls brothers would later cause unexpected problems. In fact, one of the brothers would be directly involved in what would later be the end of Elmyr''s career as a skillful art forger. For approximately three decades Elmyr de Hory used his extraordinary talent to reproduce masterpieces from some of the world''s greatest artists, including Picasso, Vlaminck, Chagall, Toulouse-Lautrec, Dufy, Derain, Matisse, Degas, Bonnard, Laurencin and Modigliani. His accuracy for detail fooled even the most skilled art connoisseurs into believing that his creations were authentic. Given their alleged provenance, Elymr sold his forgeries for high prices. Moreover, he managed to elude Interpol and the FBI for most of his criminal career. Elmyr de Hory eventually became known worldwide as one of the most talented and greatest art forgers. Even after his death, Elmyr''s works still attracted attention. Some of them even sold for the same prices as the originals. He committed suicide in 1976, and like many famous painters, he would die penniless.

Please note this lot has been withdrawn. Thank you. Elmyr de Hory (Hungarian, 1906-1976) after RAOUL DUFY 'AT THE RACES' Watercolor, 20" x 26" Apocryphal signature $4,000. - 6,000. Provenance: Galeria Moli, Ibiza, Spain Christie's Included in this lot will be copies of several letters from Bonham's and Galeria Moli concerning this work. Elmyr de Hory is perhaps the 20th century's greatest and most well-known forger. His life became the subject of several books including Clifford Irving's Fake! The Story of Elmyr de Hory: The Greatest Art Forger of our Time and was the subject of Orson Welles' last major film, F for Fake. At one point before 2005 it was estimated that if his works had been genuine, they would have a market value of more than $60 million. As might be suspected, and as attested in these various sources, it can be difficult to find the truth about de Hory's early life when sorting between what he told people and what can be learned from records. He claimed he was born into an aristocratic family, but he was actually born in 1906 into more middle-class means. He studied painting in Budapest and Berlin and by 1926 he was in Paris studying under Fernand Leger. He served time in a Transylvanian prison for political dissidents, and when World War II broke out, he was imprisoned in a German concentration camp. After the war, de Hory made his way back to Paris, and as most forgers seem to start out, made a legitimate attempt at being an artist in his own right. He shortly discovered that he had the ability to copy works by more famous painters and thus supposedly got his start when "the widow of British racing driver Sir Malcolm Campbell visited him. Spying a line drawing de Hory had done of a girl's head, she asked, 'Isn't that a Picasso?' He just sighed tragically and agreed reluctantly to sell it. Lady Campbell was hardly out the door before he had dashed off seven similar drawings." (Brian Innes, Fakes and Forgeries, pg. 79, New York, 2005) At this point, de Hory went into business with his close friend Jacques Chamberlin and they sold his Picasso fakes under the guise of being the remainder of Chamberlin's father's collection. Expanding his horizons, de Hory soon moved on to faking Renoir, Matisse, and Modigliani but to help stay undetected he made new works in their style, not copies of existing pieces. His work was in several galleries, but a recurring problem for de Hory was the dealers seemed to be making much more than he, always angering him. He met another man, Ferdinand Legros, with whom he had a stormy partnership for many years. Legros too was keeping more of the profit, but pulled maybe his greatest trick when he called a hotel posing as de Hory and claimed he would send a man named Legros to fetch his work stored there. Legros picked up the work and sold it, keeping the money for himself. By 1962, Legros had become fairly wealthy off of de Hory's back and built a home in Ibiza, Spain to pacify him. Several times de Hory's work had been put under scrutiny. In 1955 one of his Matisse works sold to Harvard's Fogg Art Museum and was discovered. Chicago dealer Joseph Faulkner pressed charges and de Hory was imprisoned in Mexico, but he paid a lawyer with a fake painting to get him out. The end came when Texas oil magnate Algur Meadows discovered some 46 to 60 works he had purchased from Legros were fakes and Legros and de Hory were finally taken into custody. Though sales took place in various countries, they were arrested in Spain due to living in Ibiza and they had attracted interest from every law enforcement agency. By this time de Hory was something of a minor celebrity. He tried again to sell his original works, never finding great success. He befriended American ex-pat Irving, to whom he told his story, and made the film with Welles before he passed away in 1976 due to a fatal overdose of sleeping pills. After his death, his work became collectible and fakes of de Hory's fakes later appeared on the market. Racing scenes were a major part of Dufy's oeuvre. He was drawn not only to the racing itself, but the glamour, fashion, and social interaction at the track, themes that show themselves in his work. It should come as no surprise then that de Hory would be drawn to Dufy's racing work, seeking to portray the same celebrity he was unable to achieve for himself.
