    • ATTRIBUTED TO JOSE DE IBARRA (GUADALAJARA, 1685 - MEXICO CITY,1756)

ATTRIBUTED TO JOSE DE IBARRA (GUADALAJARA, 1685 - MEXICO CITY,1756)

      Est: €15,000 - €18,000

Attributed to Jose de Ibarra (Guadalajara, 1685 - Mexico City,1756) 'Jesus Before the Doctors' Oil on canvas. Relined. 168 x 105 cm. Jesus was twelve years old when he went to Jerusalem with his parents and stayed in the temple (Luke 2:41-50) and met and discussed with the Doctors of the Church. The iconographic version typically places Jesus, at that age, seated in a chair while the doctors listen to him. Mary and Joseph, standing to the left in our painting, contemplate the scene expressing their joyful amazement. In our opinion, this painting is comparable to the one depicting 'The Visitation,' dated between 1731-1732, which is kept in the Quasi-Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Tlacotes, Ojo Caliente, Zacatecas. We find a great resemblance between the model used in the depiction of Saint Joachim in the Visitation painting and the character in the foreground, in profile, in the lower right corner of the artwork we have here. The painter was born in Nueva Galicia, present-day Guadalajara, during the Viceroyalty period. He received training in the workshops of significant painters such as Juan Correa or the brothers Juan and Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez. His themes are, as was almost inevitable at the time, religious. In his style, which shows sweetness and great knowledge of the human figure as well as having a Spanish influence, the relationship between Italian and French painting of the time can also be appreciated.    According to the Mexican Museum of Guadalajara's website, where the painter Ibarra has a dedicated permanent room and is considered 'one of the most important Mexican painters of the 18th century... At the age of 16, he moved to Mexico City and worked in Juan Correa's workshop, where he learnt to prepare canvases, compose paintings, and combine colorus. He completed his artistic training with the Rodríguez Juárez brothers and presented his Master's exam to the Painters Guild Commission. During the first half of the 18th century, dozens of religious images for churches in Central and South America were produced in José de Ibarra's workshop, earning him recognition as one of the 'masters of painting' in New Spain.' Spanish Americas.
