[MAPS]. [DE JODE, Gerard (1509-1591), cartographer]. Germaniae Totius, Nostrae Europae Celeberrimae Regionis Descripto Singularis. [Antwerp, 1578 or 1593]. Hand-colored map of Germany. Approximately 15 ¼ x 20 ¾”. Text on verso, reinforced at center seam with paper. 1 center vertical crease, toned, some edgewear with marginal short tears, margins trimmed a bit unevenly at bottom, some occasional soiling. Good. FROM DE JODE’S ATLAS, SPECULUM ORBIS TERRARUM, FROM EITHER THE 1578 OR THE 1593 EDITION. Original copper-engraved map of Germany by the famous cartographer, Gerard de Jode. His Speculum Orbis Terrarum is a major World Atlas, and extremely rare today. It could not be published until 1578, eight years later than the Ortelius Atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1570. His son Cornelius de Jode reissued the Atlas in 1593. The copper plates were sold to J.B. Vrients after the death of Cornelius, but no further publications were done. Compared to Ortelius or Mercator maps, only a small number of copies have been printed, making the maps of de Jode very rare. In this map, the entire area of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation is represented, from the North and Baltic Seas to nearly the Gulf of Venice, and as far as Masuria and France. A lovely decorative cartouche is represented on the lower left, in the style of Mercator with the exact title. Above it is a depiction of the German Emperor, sitting on the throne with the double-headed imperial eagle in the background. At his sides are the seven electors of the Old Kingdom. On the left, the three spiritual dignitaries: the Archbishop of Trier, the Archbishop of Cologne, and the Archbishop of Mainz. On the right are the four secular electors: the King of Bohemia, the Count Palatine of the Rhine, the Duke of Saxony, and the Margrave of Brandenburg. At the feet of each person is the national coat of arms. All princes are shown with their royal attire and attributes.

          G. De Jode's Double Hemisphere World Map

          Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Double Hemisphere World Map. Gerard de Jode (1509-1591). Copperplate Engraving from Speculum Orbis. Antwerp: c. 1593. 16 7/8 x 23 3/8 inches, 33 1/2 x 27 1/4 inches framed. Rare Twin-Hemispherical Polar Projection of the World - Reminder of the Commercial Rivalry that existed between the Elder de Jode & Abraham Ortelius. This unusual map appeared in Cornelis de Jode?s 1593 edition of the Speculum, an atlas initiated by his father, Gerard, in 1578. Although Cornelis' world map did not use the cordiform projection preferred by his father, it did employ a similar border scheme of windheads and clouds.Gerard de Jode was a contemporary - and rival - of Abraham Ortelius. The publication of his original Speculum was subjected to repeated delays in the granting of the royal privilege probably instigated by Ortelius himself, who may have used his important connections to ensure that his Theatrum was launched well before de Jode's atlas.

DE JODE, Gerard (1509-1591). A series of 15 engraved plates. [ca 1580s]. Title-page and 7 engraved plates illustrating de Jode's Septem planetae iconibus elegantissimis expressae and 7 plates illustrating the cardinal sins, each with a motto in Latin. 150 x 107 mm (5 7/8 x 4 1/4 in.) plate size, trimmed and inlaid into paper mounts, 210 x 160 mm (8 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.) (some occasional spotting and dampstaining, one plate repaired with slight loss to image, each plate with early adhesive residue on versos not affecting image). Bound together in flexible library boards, title penciled on paper label on front cover (worn). Provenance: Bibliotheca Renessiana (bookplate). A beautifully engraved set of plates by the well-known Dutch cartographer, engraver, printer, and publisher Gerard de Jode. A great rival of Ortelius, De Jode is principally known for his outstanding maps and atlases, although his Biblical and emblematic engravings, including those in this lot, illustrate his elegant craftsmanship and fine attention to detail.
