Travellers resting on a road with a landscape beyond oil on canvas 39 3/8 x 521/4 in. (100 x 132.7 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. Sale, Sotheby's, London, 16th April 1980, lot 95, as Ludolf de Jongh (unsold). with Baumkotter Gallery, London, as Ludolf de Jongh, from whom acquired in September 1980 by the present owner. LITERATURE R. E. Fleischer and S. Reiss, 'Attributions to Ludolf de Jongh: some old, some new', The Burlington Magazine, CXXXV, October 1993, p. 669, fig. 5. NOTES Professor Roland Fleischer in his 1993 article, written in collaboration with Stephen Reiss ( loc. cit. ), noted the possibility that the landscape was by another hand. The staffage is datable by comparison with other works by de Jongh to circa 1650, for example the Rest on the Hunt (location unknown, photograph preserved in the RKD files, see R.E. Fleischer, Ludolf de Jongh, Doornspijk, 1989, fig. 43) or The Cavaliers (The Hague, Dienst Verspreide Rijkskollekties), both of that date. In addition, a drawing is known depicting the young man in the foreground (Lille, Mus‚e des Beaux-Arts); on the same sheet is the head of a young lady that is used by de Jongh in a painting of A musical party of circa 1652 (Kentucky, Private Collection; see Fleischer and Reiss, op. cit, pp. 670-1, fig. 8). We are grateful to Professor Fleischer for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
