  • School of Valladolid, XVII century ca. 1630. Following models of JUAN DE JUNI (Joigny, France, 1506 - Valladolid, 1577). "Virgin of the Rosary". Carved wood. polychrome and gilded.
    Jul. 12, 2023

School of Valladolid, XVII century ca. 1630. Following models of JUAN DE JUNI (Joigny, France, 1506 - Valladolid, 1577). "Virgin of the Rosary". Carved wood. polychrome and gilded.

    Est: €12,000 - €15,000

Valladolid School, 17th century, ca. 1630. Following models by JUAN DE JUNI (Joigny, France, 1506 - Valladolid, 1577). "Virgin of the Rosary". Carved, polychromed and gilded wood. It has slight damage caused by the passage of time and previous restorations. Measurements: 118 x 48 x 35 cm. The iconography of the Virgin of the Rosary is directly related to the figure of Saint Dominic. Tradition, which began in the 15th century, tells that the mother of God herself taught the saint to pray the rosary in 1208, telling him to propagate this devotion and to use it as a powerful weapon against the enemies of the faith. Appearing in the chapel where the saint was praying, holding a rosary in his hand, he taught him to recite it, promising that many sinners would be converted and obtain abundant graces. St. Dominic went out of there full of zeal, with the rosary in his hand. He did indeed preach it, and with great success, bringing many Albigensians back to the Catholic faith. Aesthetically, the treatment of the flesh tones and the rotundity of the anatomy are very reminiscent of the works of the sculptor Juan de Juni, trained in France and Italy, from where he was asked by the Portuguese bishop Pedro Álvarez de Acosta to build the episcopal palace in Oporto. Later, around 1533, he travelled to Spain where he worked in León and participated in the decoration of the façade of the San Marcos building. With regard to his style of imagery, he maintained the expressive pathos of Burgundian art and above all in the grandiloquence of the drapery of his sculptures, inherited from the Gothic sculptor Claus Sluter, together with the influence of Michelangelo. His figures are correctly modelled, opulent, fleshy, with great emotional intensity and a marked dynamism in their clothing. These characteristics have led him to be called the father of Spanish Baroque sculpture. Together with Alonso Berruguete, he is considered the founder of the Valladolid school of sculpture, which extended throughout the 16th century with these and other sculptors, the 17th century, with Gregorio Fernández at its head, and the 18th century with Luis Salvador Carmona.
