Provenance: Estate of Julien Outin, Paris Estate of Raymond Keith Kissee This work was painted while deKnight was living in Paris at the end of the Second World War studying on the G.I. Bill. Like many of the works from this period, it displays the bold and modern spirit of optimism and innocence that many Americans felt at the beginning of the post-war era.

      AVEL DE KNIGHT (1921 - 1996) Untitled. Casein on board, circa 1973. 191x191mm; 7 1/2x7 1/2 inches. Signed in oil, lower right. From the Mirage series. Provenance: private collection, New York. Raised in New York City by Caribbean parents, Avel de Knight studied art through his teenage years and high school. After enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian in Paris with other artists such as Herbert Gentry and Romare Bearden. Once he returned to the United States in the 1960s, he taught at the Art Students League of New York. At this time, de Knight began his Mirage series where he visually recorded his appreciation for the power and wisdom of the collective unconscious through his art. His work is found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, National Academy of Design, New York, the Chrysler Museum of Art in Virginia, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York and the Robert Hull Fleming Museum in Vermont.

      AVEL DE KNIGHT (1921 - 1996) The Fall. Casein on board, 1977. 191x184 mm; 7 1/2x7 1/4 inches. Signed in casein, lower left recto. Signed, titled, and dated in ink, verso. Provenance: private collection, New Jersey. New York City native Avel De Knight began his artistic career as an art critic for the France-Amerique from 1958 to 1968 and taught at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art beginning in 1969. His art training was in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian. De Knight became well known for his surreal landscapes and abstraction which gained him membership to the National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society. His work is found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Academy of Design, The Chrysler Museum of Art, Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, Springfield Art Museum and the Robert Hull Fleming Museum.
