Daniel dela Cruz (b. 1966) - There is Light Within

          Est: ₱240,000 - ₱312,000

There is Light Within 2018 mixed metals in glass vitrine on a lighted metal base height: 12" (30 cm) length: 8 1/4" (21 cm) width: 8 1/4" (21 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Art Cube and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Daniel dela Cruz’s There is Light Within is brimming with philosophical musings, befitting a graduate of Philosophy from the University of the Philippines. In this sculpture, dela Cruz utilized mixed metals in his work – the woman sits cross-legged with her shoulders slumped forward with rows of metal chains lying on her lap. She clutches in her hands a broken mirror with a rose and mask lying on her feet. Trapped figuratively and literally in her own bubble, the woman had nothing to do but look at herself through the cracked mirror, the cracks in the mirror exacerbating her perceived “brokenness.” But as dela Cruz aptly titles this piece, there is light within her, a beauty she does not seem to realize she possesses. The artist beautifully makes this interpretation literal as he wraps the bottom of the sculpture in lights, creating a “light from within” effect. Dela Cruz's There is Light Within is a reminder for us to turn our attention inward and realize that there is beauty emanating from every single one of us. (Hannah Valiente)

Today and Always dated 2016 mixed metal H: 12” x W: 29” x L: 12” (30 cm x 74 cm x 30 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UPExpected to pursue law or medicine, Daniel dela Cruz shocked his family when, upon obtaining a degree in philosophy from the University of the Philippines in 1991, he decided to pursue art instead. This gamble paid off, as de la Cruz now is known as one of the leading sculptors of his generation. In a 2016 piece entitled Today and Always, de la Cruz depicts a sweet moment between an old couple. The old woman sits reading on a bench, her feet up on the seat and leaning against her husband, who had his arms around her. De la Cruz, despite the rigidity of the metals used, manages to soften the scene. His work is a breathing testament of growing old with a loved one and the sweet serenity that comes with it. De la Cruz has talked about leaving a lasting legacy in his work. “It’s nice to make or do something that will outlive us,” he said, and Today and Always left a tangible reminder of the cherished memory of growing up and growing old with your beloved. He learned from his father the tricks, and soon enough he was able to make stick puppets, bamboo acrobats, and “turumpos” or tops. But as he grew older, this childhood passion was set aside as de la Cruz’s parents were determined to educate their children as professionals such as lawyers or doctors. This ambition, however, was eventually defeated by de la Cruz’s inherent love for the arts. After graduating with a degree in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines Diliman, he forged his path into the creative industry. At the age of 40, de la Cruz had a breakthrough in visual arts with his debut exhibition in 2007. As a contemporary artist driven by purpose and meaning in all his creations, this 2015 metal piece titled Charade showcases his profound and intuitive artistic talents. The natural skills and understanding of varied materials enable de la Cruz to let his creative energies take over when making works of art. (P.I.R.)

Daniel dela Cruz (b. 1966) Cosmos 2017 mixed media 38" x 12" x 12" (97 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by ArtInformal and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Daniel dela Cruz’s Cosmos was among the works exhibited at his 2017 solo exhibit titled Within. The show itself sought to explore and communicate the often vague and transitory nature of dreams and our own consciousness. According to writer Gian Cruz “In these new works by dela Cruz, bodies now lay in a dream state and induce the twin illusion of fluidity and ephemerality. They evoke a strong sense of vulnerability while appearing languid. It is a subtle but immense paradox as these bodies are rendered predominantly in metal and clear transparent resin.” This approach to the exhibit is very much seen in Cosmos. In the work we see a human figure seemingly suspended in a position that implies sleep or slumber. The figure is surrounded by stars and, more importantly, an astrological chart. This belief in astrology, or that the stars guide and chart our lives is a common conviction found in different cultures across the world. But such confidence is not present in this particular piece. Instead, dela Cruz seemingly implies, in the grand scheme of things, we are merely floating or transitory ephemeral beings, looking for meaning in things beyond us when in fact such things are present within ourselves. Though Daniel de la Cruz’s unique and meticulously crafted sculptures showcase the artist’s profound and intuitive artistic talents, de la Cruz was not originally inclined to the arts as he is today. De la Cruz’s parents were bent on educating their children as professionals such as lawyers or doctors. This goal was eventually obstructed by de la Cruz’s love for the arts, a passion that grew on him during his freshman year in college. After graduating with a degree in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines Diliman, de la Cruz decided to pursue his passion and shifted to doing art full time.

The work features a human figure seemingly in the process of submerging itself in a layer of thick and opaque and opaque material. The effect is undoubtedly liminal, capturing the connection between two opposite dimensions, with the human figure representing the physical aspect, and the cloudy and misty layer acting as a stand-in for the more abstract and ethereal world of the sublime and immaterial. Thus Within posits that the two are seemingly co-existing, and only ever substantial when acting in unison. After graduating with a degree in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines Diliman, de la Cruz decided to pursue his passion and shifted to doing art full time. This particular piece titled Feed My Soul features a metal sculpture of a woman sitting on an artist’s easel. As the name suggests, one can interpret the piece as an ode to the process of creating art. The work breaks the barrier between the artist and the audience by having the artist communicate to the audience the very context that the work thrives in. One can see this through the use of the easel, an object commonly used in the creation of a work of art but rarely seen alongside the finished product, and in the graceful and timeless position of de la Cruz’s woman figure.

His father also taught him to create toys made of bamboo and wood, eventually learning how to create stick puppets, bamboo acrobats, and turumpos (tops). Surprisingly, De la Cruz graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy at the University of the Philippines. It was only in 2006 – when he was about 40 years of age – that he started to pursue a professional career in the arts. In the same year, De la Cruz staged his debut solo exhibition at the Ayala Museum. De la Cruz works with brass, copper, lead, iron, nickel, and stainless steel, with brass as his most preferred material. His sculptures are hand-hammered, carved, welded, and sculpted, with no casts made. De la Cruz also has a custom-made steel stamp that he hammers onto his sculptures to deboss his signature. According to the artist, the texture, techniques, and materials he employs in his sculpture give it its distinctive look

Achieving popularity in the world of Philippine contemporary art with his crafted brass works that use the human body as conduits of universal experience, Daniel Dela Cruz explores the unspoken weightlessness of being. The artist presents an anomaly, the tangible push of physicality, but refigured in the freeness of being beyond just that. The woman he sculpts is unbound, arms spread and hair flowing as she moves in an unperturbed wave of motion.
