        Est: £7,000 - £10,000

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian/British 1869-1937-  Portrait of Henry de László, the artist's son, seated at a table and holding a glass bowl;  oil on canvas, 55.2 x 52.7 cm.  Note:  The present work depicts Henry de László (1901-1967), the eldest of the artist's five sons, as a young child. Henry, seated at the table and playing with a glass bowl (a motif which features in many of De László's portraits of his children), looks out at the viewer with a very earnest, serious expression, which imbues the portrait with a particularly endearing quality.  De László was primarily celebrated as a society portraitist, executing commissions for high-society and prominent contemporaries. The formality of these commissioned works contrasts with his more relaxed portraits of his family, imparting these paintings with a striking sense of intimacy and affection. Indeed, this work recalls a portrait of two of the artist's other children, Paul Leonardo (1906-1982) and Patrick David de László (1909-1980), which sold at Roseberys on 27 February 2024 (lot 317) for £11,000.

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA - Portrait of John Adolphus de László, the artist's son, in Scouts' uniform

        Est: £6,000 - £8,000

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian/British 1869-1937 Portrait of John Adolphus de László, the artist's son, in Scouts' uniform;  oil on panel, signed and dated 'de László / 1926' (lower right), 53.3 x 32.4 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection.  Exhibited:  Probably included in the artist's retrospective at the gallery of Messrs Robertson & Bruce Ltd, Dundee, 1932 (bearing inscribed label verso).  Literature:  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no. 13515.  Note:  The present work depicts John Adolphus de László (1912-1990), the youngest of the artist's five sons with his wife Lucy de László, née Guinness (1870-1950), at the age of fourteen. De László has painted his son in the distinctive uniform of the Boy Scouts, imparting this portrait with a more serious air than many of the earlier childhood portraits of John Adolphus, in which he is shown playing or dressed in fanciful historical costume. John's piercing blue eyes, directed at the viewer in an unwavering gaze, powerfully recalls De László's depictions of his wife, Lucy, with the present composition almost serving as a mirror of De László's 1902 portrait of Lucy holding a violin [no. 11474].  De László was primarily celebrated as a society portraitist, executing commissions for high-society and prominent contemporaries. The formality of these commissioned works contrasts with his more relaxed portraits of his family, imparting these paintings with a striking sense of intimacy and affection.  Image four credit: de Laszlo Archive © de Laszlo Foundation.

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA - The Artist's Children Blowing Bubbles

        Est: £5,000 - £7,000

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian/British 1869-1937 The Artist's Children Blowing Bubbles;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'P.A. de László / 1914' (lower left), 38 x 48.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection.  Literature:  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no. 13519.  Note:  The present work depicts two of the artist's sons, Paul Leonardo (1906-1982) and Patrick David de László (1909-1980), playfully blowing bubbles over a bowl on a table on which toys are scattered. The particularly loose and free handling of the paint suggests that the present work is a study for a finished painting, although a completed version of the work is not known. The subject and composition do exhibit some similarities with De László's depiction of his youngest son, John Adolphus (1912-1990), in a later painting of 1918 which shows John peering into a goldfish bowl placed on the table before him (Christie's 10 Dec 2020, lot 69). The sketch-like execution of the present work does, in fact, impart a sense of spontaneity and familiarity which befits the subject, both in the identity of the sitters, and in the nature of their play.

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937-  Mrs Stephenson Clark, née Agnes Maria Bridger, 1906;  oil on board, bears old printed label 'The late Mr. P.A. de / Laszlo's Will Trust. / Master Philip de Laszlo.' attached verso, 36 x 28.3 cm.  Provenance:  In the possession of the artist on his death;  Stephen de László, his second son;  Christie's South Kensington, 13 June 1997, lot 70.  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  DLA062-0019, letter from Dr Louis Colville Clarke to de László, 13 May 1906.  Studio Inventory, 1938, p.76 (410): Study of an Elderly Lady, seated, black dress with purple drapery.  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.9045.  Note:  De László spent six weeks in England in early summer 1906, painting General Sir Francis Lloyd [De László catalogue raisonné no.12017] and his wife [no.11994], whom he had met in Vienna in February. It is not known how he became acquainted with Agnes Clarke but a letter from her son, Doctor Louis Clarke [no.4701], indicates that they had already been in contact and the artist suggested a date of 15 June to begin the present portrait. The artist made these preparatory oil studies for his significant portraits to help decide on composition and balance of colour before painting directly on the canvas.  The present picture remained in the artist’s studio until his death in 1937 and was unidentified in the studio inventory compiled by his executors. The sitter is shown seated half-length slightly to the right, full face and looking to the viewer, her hands on her lap holding a fan, a purple stole round her shoulders. The finished portrait is no.4080 in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné.  We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which will be included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.9045).  An image of the finished portrait is displayed under image 4.

        Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937-  Portrait of Sir Frederick George Painter, half-length, wearing a black suit and holding a pocket watch;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'A. Laszlo 1923.' (lower left), 92 x 61.3 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  Laib L11201 (428) / C21 (16) Sir F. Painter.  Sitters’ Book II, f. 37: Frederick Painter Oct. 2 1923.  DLA080-0027, letter from Lady Painter to de László, 10 July 1923.  DLA080-0026, letter from Sir Frederick Painter to de László, 22 October 1923.  DLA080-0025, letter from Sir Frederick Painter to de László, 25 October 1923.  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.111055.  Note:  Sir Frederick Painter commissioned his portrait after visiting the artist’s exhibition in June 1923 at the French Gallery on Pall Mall. The gallery received a commission of 10% of the honorarium and the fee for the portrait was 400 guineas (DLA080-0025, op cit., the equivalent of approximately £17,244 in 2023). A letter from Painter’s wife indicates that de László had to delay her husband’s sittings in July and she hoped he might be painted in late September: 'The portrait is to be my husband’s gift to me and I am eagerly looking forward to possessing what I feel sure will be a fine portrait, and an artistic treasure! May I suggest that when you fix the sittings you will kindly arrange for the mornings. My husband is no longer young & he finds afternoon appointments fatiguing. There is one other matter which perhaps it is early days to mention, but I believe I am right in thinking that you paint with the canvas already in the frame? May I ask for a 'dull gold' frame? The Spanish frames which we admired so much would not suit the room in which I hope to hang my husband’s portrait.' (DLA080-0027, op cit.). De László appears to have compromised by using the Spanish frame he wished but having it completely gilded rather than the more typical black with gold ornamented corners.  Sir Frederick Painter signed the Sitters’ Book on 2 October 1923 and a portrait of this type typically required two or three sittings. It was evidently a great success as Sir Frederick wrote to the artist soon after: 'We are charmed with the excellent portrait of myself which came home last Thursday. I didnt know I was so good looking! We hope you would be able to find time to give us a call to help us as to hanging the portrait but fear your time is too fully occupied. We called at Mr Laib’s but find he is away until Wednesday. All our friends who have seen your excellent work join in praise of it as a splendid portrait which is most satisfactory to me and my wife is delighted with it.' (DLA080-0026, op cit., Paul Laib was a fine art photographer used by the artist to photograph his portraits).  Painter was born on 18 December 1844, the son of James Painter and his wife Emma Tyler. On 12 December 1911, aged sixty-six, he married Marion Connolly and they lived at 8 The Boltons in Kensington. Painter was an accountant at the firm Messrs. Tribe, Clarke, Painter & Co. and served as Sheriff of London between 1913 and 1914. Just before the outbreak of the First World War he was knighted by King George V, appointed Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur by the President of France, received the Order of the Cross of Belgium, and appointed Knight of the Order of the Dannesborg with the jewel of the order presented by the King of Denmark.  He died on 9 June 1926 and is buried at Richmond and East Sheen Cemetery in Greater London. He left thousands of pounds in multiple bequests to many causes including the Bristol General Infirmary, the City of London Poor Box and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. He is here shown half-length to the right, looking full face to the viewer, wearing a black three-piece suit, with sapphire buttons on the waistcoat, a wing-collar shirt and grey bow-tie, and the thumb of his left hand hooked in his gold watch-chain.  We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which will be included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.111055.).

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  - Portrait of Paul Leonardo de László, the art…

        Est: £8,000 - £12,000

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937-  Portrait of Paul Leonardo de László, the artist's son;  oil on canvas, signed, inscribed, and dated 'To Stephen / de László / 1932' (lower left), 77.8 x 62.2 cm.  Provenance:  Stephen de László, son of the artist.  By descent;  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 12 December 2013, lot 27.  Private Collection, Spain.  Literature:  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.8354.  Note:  Paul Leonardo de László (1906-1982) was born in Vienna, the third son of Philip de László and his wife Lucy, née Guinness. His second Christian name was given to him in honour of Leonardo da Vinci, (1452-1519) whom his father much admired. The family moved to England in 1907 and Paul was educated at Twyford School, near Winchester, Rugby (where he was known for his debating skills) and Balliol College, Oxford. At Oxford he was a keen boxer, and very much involved in the Oxford Union Debating Society. After graduating from Oxford he taught history at Eton for a term, and was asked to join the permanent staff.  He declined the offer and spent a year (1927-1928) in New York working in the bank of Ladenburg Thalmann & Co. Inc. Philip de László was extremely proud when his son was called to the bar in 1929 and painted a number of portraits of him in his wig and gown. The sitter joined solicitors Gregory Rowcliffe & Co. in London, who would later act as executors of Philip de László’s estate after his death in 1937. In June 1933 Paul married Josephine Vavasour McConnell. They had three children, Christopher (born 1936), Ann (born 1938) and Jane (born 1942) and lived in Tite Street and later, Southcote Lodge, Camberley.  During the war Paul served as a Lieutenant Commander Royal Naval Volunteer based at Bletchley Park. He served in North Africa, inspected Naval Radio stations and worked in the special section of the Admiralty. He was awarded an OBE. He was a close friend of General Montgomery’s Chief of Staff, Freddie de Guingand. After the war he joined 'English Electric' as personal assistant and legal advisor to the chairman, Sir George Nelson. He became a director of the company. He retired in 1969.  His interests included photography, cine-photography, woodwork, clocks and watches, and natural history. During his schooldays he knew Harry Abrahams and they shared a job collecting films to be developed. At the age of 14 he became a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. He took many of the photographs in John Ramsbottom’s book 'Mushrooms and Toadstools'. A keen amateur conjurer, he was very skilled with his hands. During the war, when he was at home and had the time, he taught carpentry to his son Christopher and his contemporaries in his workshop.  He enjoyed designing and building electrical gadgets. Visitors to Orchards, Godalming (where he moved in 1946) were fascinated by the movie screen which was hidden behind the panelling in the hall, and which would appear at the press of a button as the lights dimmed. He took a great interest in his family which included many cousins with whom he remained in touch until he died. He was referred to as 'The Rock of the Family' and took great pleasure in his eight grandchildren. He lived at Orchards until 1974 when he moved to Haslemere, Surrey.  He died in December 1983, twenty two months after his wife Josephine.  In this highly engaging portrait study, the sitter is shown half-length, seated and to the left at a table, wearing a barrister's black gown, wing collar and a grey wig. His left elbow rests on the table with his hand raised, his right forearm across a group of papers. The portrait is inscribed to Stephen, the elder brother of the sitter.  We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which is included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.8354).

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937-  Portrait of Lajos Behr;  oil on board, signed 'P.A. Behr also signed the artist’s Sitters’ Book in 1904 suggesting the portrait was started then.  Behr wrote to de László to congratulate him on his success and commented on his portrait: 'my picture looks wonderful in the Nemzeti Szalon – it has been hung very favourably.' The exhibition was an important solo exhibition of sixty-three paintings spanning the artist’s career and celebrated his reputation in Europe before his move to London that summer.  Ludwig Behr was born on 16 August 1863 into a family traditionally of farmers and winemakers in Heidingsfeld, Bavaria. His father, however, was a painter who also worked as a gilder and restorer. His early years were spent in Würzburg before studying at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich. Thereafter he worked on refurbishing castles in Austria-Hungary, Italy and England. Around 1895 he moved to Budapest where he pursued a lucrative career as an architect and interior decorator, specialising in castles and town palaces. Among his highest profile works were the interiors of the Parliament buildings.  Behr was a notable collector of Old Masters, sculptures and 'objets d'art'. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 he returned to Bavaria where he established himself as an Impressionist painter at Tutzing on Lake Starnberg. He died in Tutzing on 18 January 1945. He is here shown half-length turned slightly to the left and looking full face to the viewer, wearing a dark brown three piece suit and black tie.  We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which will be included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.111405).

Three-years later on 26 November 1933, de László met the sitter and her husband at a dinner hosted by the Earl [no.6489] and Countess [no.6492] of Onslow at Clandon Park. He recalled: 'I painted her portrait some four years ago – she is still good looking & charming … it was a very delightful evening' (László, Philip de, 1933 diary, private collection, 26 November entry, p.25).  Edith Wallace Russell was born in Dublin on 3 July 1867, daughter of The Right Honourable Sir Thomas Wallace Russell, 1st Baronet (1841-1920), MP, and his wife Harriet Wentworth Agnew (1841-1894). In April 1896 she married Leslie Lathom Gedge, a solicitor, at St George’s Hanover Square. There were two children of the marriage: Sydney (born 1897) and Montague (born 1899). In 1904 her husband died suddenly of heart failure, aged only thirty-four, at his offices in Great George Street, Westminster. She married Edward Wigan on 28 July 1921 at Holy Trinity, Brompton, as her second husband. She died in Devizes, Wiltshire, on 17 January 1942. Her husband died only four months later on 4 May the same year. The sitter is here shown half-length in three-quarter profile to the left, wearing a stole over her sleeveless evening dress, drop earrings and a pearl necklace.  We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which will be included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.10076).

Before his arrival, an exhibition of his work took place at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, which then travelled to Knoedler’s in New York. This led to a number of important commissions, including those of President Harding [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.5569] and General Pershing [no.6887]. The sittings for those works took place at the White House interlaced with those for the present portrait, which took place on 3 and 11 July. According to the artist’s appointment book, sittings had also been arranged for 4-6 July; however, these were cancelled. The artist presented Castle with a rejected portrait of Charles Evans Hughes [no.41], who was also sitting at this time, and who signed the artist’s Sitters’ Book 16 July.  William Richards Castle, Junior was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on 19 June 1878, eldest son of William Richards Castle (1849-1935) and Ida Beatrice Lowrey (1854-1926). His father, a lawyer and politician in the independent Kingdom of Hawaii, was from a wealthy family that had founded the agricultural giant Castle & Cooke, and maintained extensive holdings there. The sitter married Margaret Farlow (1880-1970) of Boston on 3 June 1902 and they had one daughter, Rosamond (born 1904). Castle graduated from Harvard College in 1900 and served as English teacher and assistant dean from 1904 to 1913. At the outbreak of the First World War, he joined the executive staff of the Red Cross in Washington, D.C., where he became director of the Bureau of Communications. In 1919 he became a special assistant in the Department of State, and by 1921 was chief of the Division of Western European Affairs, the position he held at the time he was painted. At the pinnacle of his career Castle served as Under Secretary of State 1931-33.  Castle’s interests outside of politics were diverse. He was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1932, belonged to the Somerset Club in Boston, the Harvard and Grolier Clubs in New York, and the Metropolitan Club in Washington. He served as an overseer of Harvard College from 1935 to 1941. He was also an author, publishing two novels, The Green Vase (1912) and The Pillar of Sand (1914), and two non-fiction works Hawaii Past and Present (1915) and Life of Samuel Northrup Castle (1960), a biography of his great-grandfather. Castle died in Washington on 14 October 1963. His diaries were donated to Harvard and his papers to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library upon his wife’s death in 1970.  In this strikingly vivid portrait, he is presented half-length turned slightly to the right, full-face to the viewer, dressed in a dark suit and tie with a wing collar, his arms crossed, and a gold ring on his wedding finger.  We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which is included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.4035).

He attended Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey. During the First World War he served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves on HMS Roxburg and his service record described him as a 'hard working and competent officer.' On 12 June 1916 he married Jessie Martin Ritchtie, daughter of Alexander Ritchie, J.P. at St George’s Hanover Square in London. There were two children of the marriage: Louis (born 1920) and Norma (born 1922). In 1933 he married secondly, Barbara Gladys Morrison. Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937-  Portrait of Mrs Frederick John Nettlefold, known as The South African Nightingale;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'de László / 1931' (lower left), 100.7 x 75 cm.  Provenance:  By descent in the family of the sitter.  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  DLA078-0094, letter from de László to F J Nettlefold, 18 July 1929.  DLA078-0090, letter from F J Nettlefold to de László, 25 October 1929.  DLA078-0078, letter from FJ Nettlefold to de László, 16 June 1931.  NPG Album 1931, f. 23: Mrs. F.J. Nettlefold.  László, Philip de,1931 diary (private collection).  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.10330.  Note:  Frederick Nettlefold contacted de László in July 1929 after attending his exhibition at the French Gallery in London. He had particularly admired the dramatic portrait of the Marchioness of Milford Haven, née Countess Nadejda de Torby [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.3491] who had been painted in a dynamic pose with one bare shoulder, and wished his wife to be painted in a similar manner (DLA078-0094, op cit.).  Mrs Nettlefold was an opera singer who performed under the name Vera de Villiers. Owing to the busy schedules of both artist and sitter it was difficult to find mutually convenient times for the portrait to be completed. The artist recorded in his diary on 1 and 3 April 1931 that he was making preparatory studies, however a preparatory drawing in the collection of a descendent is inscribed '1930 / XII' [111633]. De László began painting in oil on 4 April when he described the sitter as ‘rather rough in appearance…but a great feminine charm about her.’ (László, Philip de, 1931 diary, 4 April entry, op. cit.). The sitter was pregnant at the time of sitting which influenced the composition of the portrait with her hands resting on the table in front of her. According to the artist’s diary there were six further sittings (László, Philip de, 1931 diary, 5, 8, 9, 10, 23, and 25 April entries and 1 May entry, op. cit.). The portrait must have been completed in mid-May as de László wrote to the sitter on 19 May that the paint was not yet dry enough for it to be sent to Paris to be included in his exhibition at the Charpentier Gallery (DLA078-0090, op. cit.). The letter also notes that the picture was framed and glazed by Emile Remy and photographed by Paul Laib [no.5994]. The honorarium for the portrait was £840 and this was paid on 16 June 1931 nearly two years after it was commissioned (DLA078-0078, op cit., The equivalent of approximately £38,500 in 2023).  The sitter's maiden name was Johanna Véronique Graaff and she was born on 26 September 1891 in South Africa, the daughter of Sir Jacobus Arnoldus Combrinck Graaff (1863-1927) and his wife Susan Theunissen (1881-1952). Graff was a member of the Senate of the Union of South Africa (1910-1927). She married her first husband Dr Pieter Michiel Daneel at an unknown date. As Vera de Villiers, the sitter gained international recognition as a contralto opera singer and performed throughout Britain. In 1925 she married her second husband Frederick John Nettlefold (1867-1949), actor manager and member of the Nettlefold industrial family, in 1925. There were three children of the marriage, Mary (born 1926), Frederick (born 1927) and Dorothy (born 1931). They were divorced in 1945 and she married Albert Coates (1881-1953), English orchestral conductor and composer. The couple moved to South Africa and formed a pioneering opera group there. The sitter was singer director until her husband’s death in 1953. She survived him by twenty years, dying in 1973 and is buried in Cape Town. She is here shown seated half-length, slightly to the left, head turned slightly right and looking to the viewer. She wears a blue and gold brocade stole with cream edge over evening dress, holding a string of green beads in both hands resting on a wooden table in front of her.  We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which will be included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.10330).

Aline Parkington [sic].  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.6510.  Note:  The finished portrait, for which this is a preparatory oil study, was begun by de László in January 1935. According to the artist’s diary, it was commissioned by the sitter’s paternal aunt, Mrs Alice Ann Sidebottom, possibly for her niece’s engagement to Sir Kenneth Weir Hogg, 6th Bt, whom she married in 1936. This commission seems to have challenged the artist as he destroyed two canvases before being satisfied with his third and final composition, which is almost identical to the present portrait. The finished portrait is untraced.  Aline Emily Partington was born on 8 June 1907, the only daughter of Oswald Partington, 2nd Baron Doverdale, and the Hon. Clara Isabel Murray, daughter of Montolieu Fox Oliphant Murray, 1st Viscount Elibank. She is here shown seated three-quarter length to the right, her head turned to the left, looking full face to the viewer, wearing a white evening dress with a blue sash tied round her waist.  We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which will be included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.6510).  An image of the finished portrait is displayed under image 4.

Their clothing choices and attendance at society events were regularly reported in the European and American press. The American Register described Madame Letellier's visit to the Riviera as much appreciated and almost necessary for a successful season. De László painted the sitter again in 1915 [6040] in aid of the British Red Cross who auctioned the portrait to raise funds for the war effort.Marthe 'Suzanne' Louise Fourton was born on 22 August 1878 in Paris, daughter of Charles Emile Fourton and his wife Mathilde Amalia In de Betou of Sweden. Her mother held musical salons and was painted by Benjamin Constant, one of de László's teachers when studying at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1892. On 14 August 1902, at St Augustin in Paris, she married Henri Letellier (1868-1960), proprietor of the leading Paris newspaper Le Journal and one of the wealthiest men in France. She was a favourite model of Paul-César Helleu (1859-1927) who made several portraits of her. She was also painted or drawn by John Singer Sargent, François Flameng, Antonio de La Gandara in 1903 and Giovanni Boldini, who painted her twice in 1907. The sitter and her husband separated in 1907 and divorced in 1917. Helleu's daughter, Paulette Howard-Johnston, nicknamed the sitter la cruche cassée ('the broken jug'), after Jean-Baptiste Greuze's famous painting. This was a rather cruel play on 'cruche' ('twit' in French) as she was not known for her intelligence. The French art critic Louis Vauxcelles said of her that, Among the most popular ladies of the high society we can name Madame Henri Letellier, whose powerful beauty is enhanced by an impeccable dress sense and natural style which allows her to set new trends which will last forever. The sitter died in 1949.We are grateful to Katherine Field for her kind assistance in preparing this catalogue note.

Photo credit: de Laszlo Archive © de Laszlo Foundation.  Provenance:  The artist's family.  Anon. sale, Phillips, London, 12 January 1993, lot 72.  with Trinity House Paintings, London, no.1658.  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.110490.  Note:  Studio Inventory p.27 (150): 'The Spanish Dancers appeared at the Spanish Club and the Artist invited the Senora to pose for him. She arrived with her partner (her husband) and to avoid any jealousy they were painted as a group. The Senor, however, was annoyed to find himself providing a background for his wife’s figure.'  Although primarily celebrated as a society portraitist, executing commissions for high-society and prominent contemporaries, de László could also be inspired by an individual's striking appearance to produce a likeness.  He was highly impressed by the picture ‘El Jaleo’ by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) when he visited Boston in 1908, remarking ‘No contemporary picture has impressed me so profoundly. It displays Sargent’s master of his art and reproduces the very atmosphere of Spain, together with the lovely figure of the passionate and graceful dancer’ [Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston no. P7s1]. Indeed, he was clearly particularly interested in the subject of Spanish dancers, and frequently chose to depict his sitters in their associated elaborate and distinctive costume. For example, he painted the dancer and actress Tina Meller (née Agustina Marqués López) on multiple occasions wearing Spanish dress, including in his 1929 portrait which sold recently at Christie's, London, 6 December 2021 for £23,750 [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.112242]. Two other portraits of Meller in traditional Spanish dress are listed in the catalogue raisonné, one having been destroyed by fire in 1989, and the other in an unknown location [de László Archive Trust catalogue nos 6317 and 6316]. The present work is further comparable with de László's painting 'Señorita Adrina Otéro, A Spanish Dancer' (19350) [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.6494] who wears a traditional flamenco skirt.  The present work is characteristic of de László's mature style, exhibiting his free, masterful, and loose brushwork, which imparts a palpable sense of motion, invigorating the composition and gesturing towards the swirling movement of the dancers in action.

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937-  A Hungarian peasant with a moustache;  oil on board, 75 x 50.8 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.110949.  Note:  Painted in c.1901.  Although de László is now best-known as a portrait painter to early 20th-century European royalty, aristocracy, and high society, he first established his name in his native Hungary as a painter of genre scenes, heavily influenced by his teachers Károly Lotz (1833-1904) and Bertalan Székely (1835-1910), both of whom were celebrated for their historical and genre paintings. Such early scenes by de László include his 'Goose Girl' of 1888, for which there is no visual record; his 'The First Washing Lesson' of 1889 [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.11561]; 'The Hofbräuhaus' (1892), probably his most famous early work, held in the Hungarian National Gallery [52.1058]; and his 'Regret, or Love Spurned' [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.10718]. These early works feature characters and settings from Hungarian peasant life. In 'Regret, or Love Spurned', for example, the time-worn faces of the sitters resemble those of the subject in the present work, and highlight de László's early fascination with the subjects of unknown, humble figures, in stark contrast with the high-profile sitters who formed the majority of his later output.

In fact there exists one exact copy in the Bulawayo Club, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and Kendrick painted another portrait of the sitter, also half length, but wearing his robes and decorations as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, which remains in a private collection.  Sir Henry Birchenough was the second son of John Birchenough JP of Macclesfield, a silk manufacturer. Born in 1853, he was educated at Oxford University, University College London and in Paris. He was married to Mabel, third daughter of the Very Rev. G.G. Bradley, Dean of Westminster. There were two daughters of the marriage. The sitter was created a Baronet in 1920.  Sir Henry came to public notice after the Second Boer War, when at the suggestion of Lord Milner he was dispatched to South Africa as Government Special Trade Commissioner, for which he received a CMG in 1905. His role in South Africa resulted in his report on “The present position and future prospects of British trade in South Africa” and initiating a system for monitoring foreign competition and commercial information that could be shared for the benefit of British traders. In 1905, he became a director of the British South Africa Company and from 1925 held the post of President of the company until his death in 1937. In this respect, he was particularly close to Baron Emile d’Erlanger, who financed nearly all of the railways of the British South Africa Company from 1892 onwards, and who also sat to de László. Sir Henry also took a leading role in 1905 in the negotiations between representatives of the Rhodesian settlers and the colonial office which resulted in the country eventually becoming a self-governing colony.  The sitter was a member of the board of Directors of the Rhodesian Railway company from 1906 and became Chairman of the Rhodesia and Mashonaland Railway Companies in 1925; a position which he too held until his death. In 1906, he also served as a Member of the Advisory Committee to the Board of Trade and a Member of the Royal Commission on Shipping Rings. An advocate of preferential tariffs, he was also a member of Joseph Chamberlain’s Tariff Commission. He furthermore held a directorship of the Imperial and Continental Gas Association, and was Chairman of the Beit Railway Trust from 1931-1937.  During and after the First World War, Sir Henry played a role in the reconstruction process, chairing the board of Trade Textiles Committee in 1916 and served as a Member of Lord Balfour of Burleigh's Committee on Commercial and Industrial Policy. Still in 1916, he was created KCMG. In 1917 he was Chairman of the Royal Commission on Paper and Chairman of the Committee on Cotton Growing in the Empire. In 1918 he became Chairman of the Advisory Council to the Ministry of Reconstruction and Government Director of the British Dyestuffs Corporation. His interest in fiscal reform and knowledge of Britain’s economic competitors within her colonies stood him in good stead in these positions, and subsequently after the war he went on to take a seat on the Southborough committee that had been appointed to explore ways of accelerating economic development in British East Africa. He published many articles on political and economic subjects in the nineteenth century and was a Fellow of the Royal Empire Society. He was promoted to GCMG in 1935.  Following his death on 12 May 1937, his ashes, together with those of his wife, were interred in a pillar of the Birchenough Bridge, which still bears his name and spans the Sabi River in modern-day Zimbabwe.’

(Budapest 1869–1937 London) Portrait of Countess Therese Brockdorff, née von Loën (1846–1924), signed, dated László F. E.. / 99 XI. / Potsdam, red, brown and white chalk on cardboard, 67 x 47 cm, framed with original frame Provenance: Private Collection, Germany. We are grateful to Christopher Wentworth-Stanley, The de László Archive Trust for the scholarly advice. The present lot is archived in the Catalogue Raisonné Philip de László, no. 113508. Baroness Therese von Loën was born in Potsdam on 28 August 1846, the daughter of the Prussian infantry general Leopold Baron von Loën and his wife Gabriele von Bülow. On 16 October 1871 she married in Tegel, Berlin, Cay-Bertram Count von Brockdorff (1837-1878). Widowed at the age of 32, Countess Brockdorff became lady-in-waiting to Auguste Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein (from where the Brockdorffs come) on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Wilhelm of Prussia in 1881. On his becoming Emperor Wilhelm II in 1888, she was appointed Comptroller of the Empress’s Household. Together with the ladies-in-waiting Mathilde Countess Keller and Claire von Gersdorff, these three most senior ladies of the Household and formed, in their devotion to the Empress, a protective cordon around her. Collectively they were known as the “Allelujah Aunts” (“Halleluja Tanten”) and all three signed the artist’s sitters’ book together, probably while de László was painting his first portrait of the Empress in November 1899, at the same time the present drawing and the untraced oil portrait of Countess Brockdorff (ill. above) were made. Countess Brockdorff accompanied the Empress into exile at Doorn and stayed even after the Empress’s death in 1921. She herself died on 11 August 1924 and is buried with the other two “Allelujah Aunts” in one grave in Potsdam.

de László, Philip (1869 - 1937) Half-Length Portrait of William Aiken Signed and dated 1932 Oil  Property of a Gentleman Dimensions:  32 in (H) x 26 in (W) Lot Essay: Philip de László was born in Budapest in 1869 and is considered one of Europe's most successful and respected portrait painters. He painted portraits for numerous heads of state (including four American presidents) and members of European royal families. William Aiken, the sitter, was deeply involved with the city of Dundee and was a keen patron of the arts. He became City Chamberlain and served during World War Two as Divisional Food Officer. He was appointed Justice of the Peace, and in 1949 received the Order of the British Empire. His portrait is recorded in the artist's archive, and was executed in a single morning on the 26th July 1932. The swift, expressive brushwork of this portrait concisely captures the personality of its subject with whom the artist had developed a friendship after first meeting him in 1929. It is typical, too, of the artist's portraits of male sitters (such as that of Sir Luke Fildes, held in the National Portrait Gallery, London), in its warm brown and black background, enlivened by the vivid midnight blue of his suit and tie.
