An influential rendering of the Rio Grande River and marks the western border of “La Floride” as a French possession. Guillaume De L'Isle (1675-1726), is considered one of the greatest figures in French cartography, ranking after Ptolemy and Mercator as one of the lead contributors to the science of cartography. He came from a family of geographers: his father Claude a minor geographer and his brothers Joseph Nicholas and Louis became astronomers and surveyors for Peter the Great of Russia. De L'Isle's maps marked a transition from those of the ruling Dutch school, which were highly decorative, to a more scientific approach. He was also a fundamental figure in the recalculation of latitude and longitude, establishing a new standard of accuracy readily adopted by his contemporaries including Chatelain, Covens & Mortier, and Albrizzi.

DE L'ISLE - French Map of North America 1742

        Est: $1,200 - $1,400

Amsterdam: Pierre Schenk, 1708. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring. Sheet size: 19 7/8 x 23 3/4 inches. Schenk's rare derivative of De L'Isle's famed map. In 1700, Claude and Guillaume D L'Isle [first] published their foundation map of North America. What better way to usher in the eighteenth century cartographically than with this significant and influential map. It encapsulates an era in which the French exemplified a reliance on scientific mapping and beautifully incorporated it into the earlier influence of decorative augmentation (Burden). Tooley adds: A foundation map. The Great Lakes based on Coronelli show the French strong points at Tadousac, Quebec, Fort Sorel, Montreal & Fort Frontenac. the English settlements confined to the east of the Alleghenies, with Fort and River Kinibeki as the border between New England and Acadia. The Mississippi valley area is shown well developed with the recent French settlement of d'Iberville at Bilochy and forts at Bon Secours and St. Louis. In this map De l'Isle corrected longitude positions and was the first to revert to a peninsula form of California. Perhaps most significantly, in the second and subsequent states of the map the mouth of the Mississippi is accurately shown for the first time, being the first map to depict information from the surveys of the D'Iberville expedition. Following the end of Renard's contract to sell De L'Isle's maps in Amsterdam, Petrus Schenk issued the present re-engraved derivative map of De l'Isle's original. Burden notes it to be an almost exact derivative..

      • DE L'ISLE - [North and South America] 1742

DE L'ISLE - [North and South America] 1742

        Est: $600 - $800

Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, [1742]. Engraving with period outline colour. Sheet size: 21 3/4 x 25 3/4 inches. Some mild soiling. Discolouration at centerfold. An elegant map of North and South America, the most accurate to date, produced for the usage du Roy, Louis XV. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers-in-law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed much of its success to his access to French publishers, whose publications he re-issued in handsome editions. The elder Mortier died in 1711; his wife continued the firm until she died in 1719. In 1721, Covens and Mortier formed a partnership, Covens having married Agatha Mortier in the same year. They continued the business by publishing enlarged editions of Sanson, Jaillot, and De L'Isle, as well as some of the later Dutch cartographical masters such as De Wit and Allard, and of course Pierre Mortier. This map is from an edition of De L'Isle entitled, Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. Par Guillaume de l'Isle. Premier Géographe de sa Majesté. It is his map of North and South America shown on a large enough scale that western Europe and Africa are included. The map includes the rectification of South America's eastern coast line, correcting a map of South America whose Chilean-Argentinian peninsula swung to the west. The map also includes a Prime Meridian declared by Louis XIII, but not adopted and Pope Alexander VI's Line of Demarcation that divided the world (outside of Europe) between Portugal and Spain. Finally, it should be noted that De l'Isle resisted the temptation to depict California as an island, which was being done by many mapmakers of the period.
