Guillaume De L'Isle (1675-1726), is considered one of the greatest figures in French cartography, ranking after Ptolemy and Mercator as one of the lead contributors to the science of cartography. He came from a family of geographers: his father Claude a minor geographer and his brothers Joseph Nicholas and Louis became astronomers and surveyors for Peter the Great of Russia. De L'Isle's maps marked a transition from those of the ruling Dutch school, which were highly decorative, to a more scientific approach. He was also a fundamental figure in the recalculation of latitude and longitude, establishing a new standard of accuracy readily adopted by his contemporaries including Chatelain, Covens & Mortier, and Albrizzi.
