AUGUSTO MANUEL DE QUESADA Y VÁZQUEZ (Seville, 1824 - 1891). "Portrait of a young man", ca. 1850. Oil on canvas. Period frame, with faults. Measurements: 125 x 92 cm; 145 x 113 cm (frame). In this portrait we see a young man elegantly dressed in a costume reminiscent of the clothing of an adult. This idea is favored with the pose that the model adopts and the sober gesture of his face. Portrayed with a long bust, the young man is leaning on a book that is part of the props of the room in which he is immersed. The dominant chromatic range revolves around cold and dark colors, in a sober and restrained intonation typical of the portrait painting of this time. The pictorial activity of Augusto Manuel de Quesada can be framed in Romanticism and Costumbrismo. His work is influenced by the style of Murillo and dedicated to portraiture and religious themes. He studied between 1835 and 1843 at the School of the Academy of Noble Arts of St. Elizabeth of Seville, today the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Seville. According to E. Valdivieso, he is considered a secondary painter of limited talent. According to this author, his paintings show "weakness of drawing and coldness in his coloring". However, during his lifetime, he received several awards. In 1842 he was awarded by the Economic Association of Friends of the Country of Seville for several copies of paintings made. His paintings "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" and "Santa Casilda" were awarded in 1858 at the Exhibition of the Economic Society of Jerez de la Frontera, with bronze medal and honorable mention, respectively. The painting "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" was also exhibited at the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1864, and his work "San Juan" was awarded a silver medal at the exhibition held in Cadiz in 1862. The Dukes of Montpensier had two of his paintings in their Palace of San Telmo: "La Virgen de los Reyes, adorada por San Fernando y San Luis" and "El Milagro de los panes y los peces".

AUGUSTO MANUEL DE QUESADA Y VÁZQUEZ (Seville, 1824 - 1891). "Portrait of a gentleman, 1878. Oil on canvas. Preserves period frame with faults. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 125 x 92 cm; 142 x 110 cm (frame). In this portrait we see an elegantly dressed gentleman, portrayed with a long bust and slightly turned, as usual in the official portrait painting of the time. The protagonist of the scene is haughty and distant with respect to the viewer, with one gloved hand and the other relaxed on the back of a chair whose ornamentation harmonizes with the romantic style cabinet in which the figure is inscribed. The pictorial activity of Augusto Manuel de Quesada can be framed in Romanticism and Costumbrismo. His work is influenced by the style of Murillo and dedicated to portraits and religious themes. AUGUSTO MANUEL DE QUESADA Y VÁZQUEZ (Seville, 1824 - 1891). "Noli me tangere", 1857. Oil on canvas. Relined. Signed and dated. Measurements: 94 x 125 cm; 113 x 144 cm (frame). In this devotional scene we can appreciate the figure of Christ leaning on the well's curbstone, dressed with dark blue tunic and red mantle, in front of a young lady who holds a pitcher and addresses Jesus. The gestures of the figures indicate that both characters are establishing a conversation, since the figure of Christ adopts a familiar posture with respect to the young lady. He opens his hands as if he were narrating something to himself, while the woman adopts a passive attitude of listening. Due to the iconographic characteristics of the work, the theme can be identified as the one known as "Jesus and the Samaritan woman" or "The Samaritan woman at the well" or "Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar". Such a scene is related in the Bible by St. John (4: 4-26). "There came a woman of Samaria to draw water: and Jesus said unto her, Give me to drink. For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, 'How is it that you, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, to drink? For Jews and Samaritans do not treat one another. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith unto thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou the living water? art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us this well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. And the woman said unto him, Lord, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw." The representation of this story has a long tradition because of the allusions in the text to water as "Divine Grace" or "Living Water" and because of the veiled allusion to the preaching and evangelization in it. Thus, we have it in paleochristian sarcophagi ("Sarcophagus of the Trees", Louvre Museum), on Mount Athos, in the work of Duccio, etc. The pictorial activity of Augusto Manuel de Quesada can be framed in Romanticism and Costumbrismo. Portrait of oval format in which an elderly gentleman with white hair and beard in the German style is represented in the court.
