    Est: €6,000 - €7,000

Circle of JACOB WILLEMSZ DE WET (Haarlem, ca. 1610-Cologne ?, 1677/1691). "Sacrifice at Lystra. Paul and Barnabas are honoured by the pagans as gods". Oil on oak panel. Open board with faults. The frame has xylophagous damage. Measurements: 61 x 85 cm; 90 x 114 cm (frame). This work on oak panel is related to the circle of Jacob Willemsz not only because it is a biblical painting with a multitude of characters, but also because of the careful morphology and the careful study of each of the characters, an aspect typical of Willemsz's painting. The painting depicts the episode in which Paul and Barnabas healed a lame man who was able to walk after being looked at by Paul. Then the crowd, seeing what Paul had done, raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language: Gods like men have come down to us. And they called Barnabas Jupiter, and Paul Mercury, because he was the speaker. Jacob Willemsz was a Dutch Baroque painter who specialised in biblical and history painting, sometimes in the form of landscapes with figures. Little is known of his biography although it is known that he may have had contact with Rembrandt in Leiden due to the style of his early chiaroscuro paintings. He had a large number of pupils - up to thirty-four are mentioned - of whom the best known are Jan Vermeer van Haarlem, Job Adriaensz. Berckheyde and Paulus Potter, who may have entered to study with Wet in May 1642.

Oil on cradled panel Netherlands, after 1650 Jacob Willemsz de Wet (c.1610-c.1675) – Haarlem landscape and genre painter This work is accompanied by a certificate by Prof. Dr. Werner Sumowski, dated 6 June 1999 Dimensions: 77 x 110 cm Framed: 113 x 137.5 cm Good condition Classical subject of the Haarlem master with a scene from the Old Testament; paintings by Jacob Willemsz de Wet fetch up currently to around €13,000 in the auction market Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 5,000 Euro Condition: The work is in good restored condition. The painting shows spotty retouches and a restored fissure in the upper left image half. Partially framing marks can be found in the area of the edges. The rear frame is slightly bumped in places. The dimensions are 77 x 110 cm. The frame measures 113 x 137.5 cm. Jacob Willemsz de Wet (c. 1610-c.1675) Little is known about the early life of the Haarlem painter. Houbraken mentions him rater secondarily as an art dealer in the biographical sketches of Philip Wouwerman. De Wet, since 1632 member of Haarlem Guild of St. Luke, left a notebook that mentions 34 pupils, such as the landscape and animal painter Paulus Potter. Measured by the number of his students, it seems that de Wet led a large and successful workshop in Haarlem. His son, Jacob II was the only one of de Wet’s children, which also was trained to a painter. The works of De Wet was stylistically influenced by Rembrandt van Rijn.
