    Est: -

James Dean (1931-1955) was an American actor, who has gone on to become a cultural icon - the ultimate Rebel Without a Cause. Due to his death at an early age, his memorabilia is incredibly rare and valuable, giving rise to the term "The James Dean Effect". This is a superb single page from the Fairmount High school yearbook, 1949, measuring approximately 10.4" x 7.7". featuring photo portraits of 10 of that year's graduating students, including James Byron Dean (1931-1955). Signed in pencil underneath his portrait "Jim Dean". Instances of Dean's autograph where he has signed "Jim" instead of "James" are extremely rare. An early autograph from the iconic film star. Below his photograph, Dean is described as "our regular basketball guy, and when you're around him - time will fly". The right-hand page edge has some loss where it has been carelessly removed from the book, with some minor loss to the edge of Dean's portrait.

An extremely rare vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, the iconic image depicting Dean in a moody head and shoulders pose from his most celebrated film Rebel Without a Cause (1955) in which he starred in the role of Jim Stark. Signed in fountain pen ink at the base of the image, 'To Linda, with my best wishes, James Dean', largely across a clear area and with a perfectly legible signature. Signed photographs of the cultural icon are extremely rare as a result of his tragically early death at the age of 24 in a motor accident, and this example is particularly desirable. Some very light, minor corner and surface creasing, VG JAMES DEAN (1931-1955) Actor estadounidense. James Dean

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

James Dean American actor (1931-1955) best known for his star turns in three 1950s screen classics: East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant. His untimely death in a high-speed car crash came to represent the very embodiment of the 'live fast, die young' philosophy-and elevated him to the status of a legend that remains unique in the annals of Hollywood. Rare and highly desirable bank check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Dean, payable to Lee Diamond Co. for $131.00, September 22, 1954. In fine condition, with expected bank stamps and cancellation holes, a couple lightly affecting first stroke of the signature. Dean was in Hollywood around this time finishing work as Cal Trask, the troubled son of a wealthy businessman, in the film East of Eden. This very month, Eden director Elia Kazan wound up screening a rough cut of his film for colleague Nicholas Ray, director of Rebel Without a Cause, who was so impressed by Dean's on-screen presence that he offered the star the famed role. Just slightly more than a year to the day after this jewelry store visit, Dean was killed in his Porsche 550 Spyder.

    Est: £200 - £300

    * Dean (James, 1931-55). Three vintage gelatin silver exhibition blow up prints of James Dean by Sandford H. Roth (1906-1962), c. 1956, all scenes from the film Giant, each approx. 34 x 23cm or similar, mounted on separate boards with signature (?) of the photographer in capitals on mount beneath images, a few minor surface marks and one small split to upper margin of one photograph showing James Dean with cowboy hat and lasso, mounts a little marked and one spotted and slightly damp stained, photographer's copyright wetstamp to verso of all three boards . Roth was a personal friend of James Dean whom he had met on the set of Giant. Dean treated Sandy and his wife Beulah as adoptive parents and poignantly, Sandford Roth was in the car behind James Dean when he died in the tragic car accident. He took the famous post-accident photographs, but out of respect for his friends and family he destroyed the negatives of Dean. (3)

Double cloth-matted with an impressive oversized matte-finish photo to an overall size of 37.25 x 28. In fine condition. Originally obtained at a hotel in Marfa, Texas, this signature was one of the last he signed, as Dean was killed before filming was even complete on Giant. And while Dean is rare in any form, this signature-adding the character name from his last film, and eerily, the year of his death-is particularly desirable! Oversized.

    JAMES DEAN

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

JAMES DEAN (1931 - 1955) American film actor and handsome screen idol, Dean portrayed an anguished teenager and made only three films before his death in a car wreck at the age of 24. A very rare original lobby card for his most famous film East of Eden. Measuring 14" x 11" and printed in 1955, the card shows Dean in a tender embrace with co-star Julie Harris. Inscribed and signed at top margin: "To Bob with all my best wishes James Dean". Light chipping to margins, fold to top right corner, toning to margins and piece of tape at left margin, pin holes and silked at top chip. Still very good.

Autograph: James Dean - American actor (1931-1955) best known for his star turns in three 1950s screen classics: East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant. His untimely death in a high-speed car crash came to represent the very embodiment of the "live fast, die young" philosophy-and elevated him to the status of a legend that remains unique in the annals of Hollywood. Bank check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Dean, payable to James Dean for $45.00, January 29, 1954, and also endorsed on the reverse, "James Dean." In fine condition, with an unobtrusive vertical fold through a single letter of the signature on the pay line and expected cancellation holes, affecting the same signature.About a week later, on February 8, 1954, Dean debuted on Broadway as Bachir in The Immortalist, appearing with Louis Jordan and Geraldine Page. The up-and-coming star received rave reviews for his performance as a blackmailing Arab houseboy, and although Dean left the play only two weeks after it opened on Broadway-due to a dispute with the producer-the part brought him his first important recognition as an actor. It also captured the attention of Elia Kazan, who was casting a movie treatment of John Steinbeck's novel, East of Eden.

In fine condition, with cancellation holes and crease to lower left and some scattered light show-through from stamps on reverse, and a small red pencil cancellation touching the last letter of the signature. Dean was in Hollywood around this time finishing work as Cal Trask, the troubled son of a wealthy businessman, in the film East of Eden. This very month, Eden director Elia Kazan wound up screening a rough cut of his film for colleague Nicholas Ray, director of Rebel Without a Cause, who was so impressed by Dean's on-screen presence that he offered the star the famed angst-filled role. Almost a year to the day after this drug store visit, Dean was killed in his Porsche 550 Spyder. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.

Bank check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Dean, payable to National Auto Club for $16.00, November 22, 1954. In fine condition, with cancellation holes to body, show-through from stamps on reverse, a couple of clerical pencil notations (including one of Dean's telephone numbers) to lower left, and a slight cancellation ink mark to first name of signature.More than just words, Dean's credo was an eerily prophetic way of life, and death, for Dean, whose need for speed, racing and "living on the edge" are all well-documented in many books, documentaries, and biographies. The Indiana native found that success in Hollywood afforded him the luxury of indulging in whatever pursuit he chose, with race cars-specifically, Porsches-topping the list. It's no small wonder that he would want to reserve the services of the auto club. Using his wealth to feed his hobby, Dean initially "settled" for a Speedster convertible, using a 356 Speedster on the California road race circuit. He later traded up to the new performance-driven 550 Spyder-a vehicle he planned to enter in a Salinas, California competition until he was involved in a fatal head-on cash on September 30, 1955, ten months after endorsing this check.

JAMES DEAN(1931 - 1955) American film actor and handsome screen idol, Dean portrayed an anguished teenager and made only three films before his death in a car wreck at the age of 24. Rare T.L.S. "James Dean", 1p., 8vo., Hollywood, CA., June 11, 1955, on personal letterhead regarding his Academy Award nominated role as Cal in the film East of Eden, with the original transmittal envelope with Dean's name and address imprinted on the flap. In part: "...Thanks so much for your letter and its generous praise. 'East of Eden' was, I think, an unusual and sensitive motion picture. Playing Cal was gratifying, and praise such as yours makes me feel that it was a worthwhile undertaking. Thanks again, and all the best in life to you...". In 1953, director Elia Kazan was looking for an actor to play the role of "Cal Trask" in screenwriter Paul Osborn's adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1952 novel East of Eden. The book is the story of the Trask and Hamilton families over the course of three generations, focusing especially on the lives of the latter two generations in Salinas Valley, California in the mid-1800s through the 1910s. However, the film chose to deal predominantly with the character of Cal Trask, the rebel son of a pious, and constantly disapproving, father (played by Raymond Massey), and estranged mother, whom Cal discovers is a successful, brothel-keeping madam (Jo Van Fleet). Elia Kazan said of Cal before casting "I wanted a Brando for the role". Osborn suggested to Kazan that he instead consider Dean for the part. After introducing Dean to Steinbeck, and gaining his enthusiastic approval, Kazan set about putting the wheels in motion to cast the relatively unknown young actor in the role. On March 8, 1954, Dean left New York City and headed for Los Angeles to begin shooting. Much of Dean's performance in the film is completely unscripted, such as his dance in the bean field and his curling up and pulling his arms inside of his shirt on top of the train during his ride home from meeting his mother. The most famous improvisation during the film was when Cal's father rejects his gift of $5,000 in reparation for his father's business loss: instead of running away from his father as the script called for, Dean instinctively ran to Massey and desperately embraced him. This cut and Massey's surprised reaction were kept in the film by Kazan. He received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for this role, the first posthumous acting nomination in Academy Awards history. Written just three months before Dean's death at age 24, and a very rare example. Auction records of the past 25 years do not show a single Dean letter having been sold. Very good.

DEAN, JAMES. 1931-1955. RARE SIGNED WARNER BROS. DOCUMENT. Mimeographed Document Signed ("James Dean"), 2 p, 4to, New York, NY, April 7, 1954, being an agreement between Dean and Warn Bros. Pictures, Inc. regarding the repayment of a loan of $700, light creasing and toning, staple perforations to upper left corner; together with Typed Letter Initialed of R.J. Obringer, 1 p, 8vo, Burbank, CA, April 9, 1954, on pink Warner Bros. Inter-Office stationery, to F.E. Witt, providing explication of the Dean document, light creasing and thumbing, otherwise fine. After a successful turn on Broadway in The Immoralist, James Dean was cast by director Elia Kazan in the film adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden. In the film Dean plays Cal Trask, the wayward son of a Salinas lettuce farmer who fails to win his father's acceptance. Though Dean would rocket to stardom upon the release of the film, it's clear that, at this point at least, the Warner Bros. brass were not that impressed with his talents. In this document they insist on a rigid and speedy repayment schedule for the advance of $700, acknowledging the possibility that the young actor will be fired from his role. From Dean's promissory note: "This is to acknowledge that I have received from you this day the sum of Seven Hundred ("$700.00) Dollars as a loan and I have given you my promissory notes under which I am required to repay you. You are hereby authorized to deduct said sums from my weekly compensation in each of the respective seven (7) weeks that each of the aforesaid dates fall. In the event that I am not allowed to continue to render my services in the role of 'Cal' in the motion picture tentatively entitled 'EAST OF EDEN' and you are required to compensate me for the minimum ten (10) weeks of employment referred to in paragraph 4A of our agreement dated April 7, 1954, you are hereby authorized to deduct from such payment any sums due and unpaid for under the aforesaid promissory notes and loan." The document also notes that, if he is fired, Dean will be responsible for repaying his travel expenses to California as well.
