          Est: €1,500 - €2,000

SABATINO DE ANGELIS (Italy, 1838-?) et Fils. "Apollo". Bronze. Signed on the base. Measurements: 61 x 23 x 23 cm. Classicist sculpture signed by Sabatino et Fils, the family company founded by Sabatino De Angelis, a renowned bronze sculptor whose pieces were inspired by Greek and Pompeian statuary. The figure in question shows an athletic ephebe, probably embodying Apollo, the god of music, although it could also identify Adonis, the lover of Aphrodite. The nude body embodies the Greek ideal of beauty, with its harmonious canon of supple, rounded limbs. A slight twist of the bust gives the contrapposto a graceful movement.

Signed De Angelis Copper Standing Nude Narcissus, 1905

          Est: $1,200 - $1,600

Sabatino De Angelis (Italian, 1838-1910s), Narcissus (from the antiquities, Vicolo del Balcon Pensile in Pompeii), 1905. Signed Sab De Angelis & Fils Naples, 1905. A wonderful Neoclassical copper sculpture of Narcissus in the round, hollow cast and standing in elegant contrapposto with his left hand resting by his hip and his right arm bent and raised, his right hand making a gesture. Tied over his left shoulder is the skin of a goat, and he wears high strapped handles on his feet. Otherwise Narcissus is nude, and quite beautiful. This work is iconographically based upon the Sauroktonos of Praxitiles which the artist reinterpreted as a Dionysiac figure. The figure stands upon a tiered round pedestal that is signed Sab De Angelis & Fils Naples, 1905. Size: 22.875" H (58.1 cm) Another example of this Sabatino De Angelis sculpture - called The Young Bacchus but of the same subject - hammered at $1,207 (HUF 340,000) at Biksady Gallery and Auction House, 24 May 2016 in Budapest, Hungary. Est: $800 - $1,400

After the antique (found at Pompei). Standing nude male figure of the hunter Nacissus. Measures 24” tall overall, Signed on base Sabatino De Angelis, Napoli 1896”. Weathered patina. Narcissus -- in Greek mythology, the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Leiriope; he was distinguished for his beauty. His mother was told that he would have a long life, provided he never looked upon his own features. He fell in love with his own reflection in the waters of a spring and pined away (or killed himself); the flower that bears his name sprang up where he died. The story may have derived from the ancient Greek superstition that it was unlucky or even fatal to see one's own reflection. In psychiatry and especially psychoanalysis, the term narcissism denotes an excessive degree of self-esteem or self-involvement, a condition that is usually a form of emotional immaturity.
