ALFRED FRANK DE PRADES (France, 1825-England, 1895). "Horse in the Stable, 1871. Oil on cardboard. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Frame with slight faults. Measurements: 47 x 62 cm; 56 x 70 cm (frame). The mastery that Alfred De Prades acquired painting his favourite subject, the equine subject, is evident in the anatomy and the smoothness of the coat of this horse of noble bearing. French painter who worked in Victorian England. An animalist known above all for his paintings of horses and military subjects, De Prades's works follow closely in the tradition of George Stubb. De Prades gained considerable popularity among the British nobility. Information about his life up to the age of about 25 is scarce, although it is known that he grew up in England from the age of 16, when his father, Emile Prades-Prestreau, left his wife in Paris and settled in London, changing his name from Prestreau to Prades. By the age of thirteen, he was already painting equine subjects. A surviving canvas painted at this age, Down the Stretch, is a study executed in 1838 that shows an early interest in horses, racing and his instinctive mastery of equine anatomy. De Prades was a regular participant in the exhibitions of the British Institution, a group of artists who rebelled against the formalism of the Royal Academy of Arts, but he was nevertheless accepted into at least three major Royal Academy of Arts exhibitions, beginning with a monumental scale painting in 1857 (Exhibition No. 1122). He went on to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1861 and 1879, as well as at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool). His work is now in the National Army Museum, the Walker Art Gallery, the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and the Royal Collection, among others. King Edward VII commissioned De Prades to paint a picture of his racehorse "Fairplay", winner of the 1882 Household Brigade Cup at Sandown, which further consolidated his patronage by the aristocracy of the United Kingdom. "Fairplay is recorded as hanging at Buckingham Palace in 1909 and remains in the Royal Collection.

Alfred Frank De Prades British, 1820-1890 Stilton, Winner of the Metropolitan Stakes, 1852 Signed A.F. de Prades and inscribed Stilton, winner of the Metropolitan Stakes, 1852... (lc) Oil on canvas 17 3/4 x 27 3/8 inches (45 x 69.5 cm) Stilton was sired by Cotherstone, winner of the Classic 2000 Guineas and Derby in 1843 and was owned by Mr James Meiklam (1800-1854), a well known Scottish racehorse owner. Trained by Thomas Dawson, one of the most famous trainers of his day. The Virginia Museum of Art has in their collection a portrait of Dawson and his family by J.F. Herring, Snr. dated 1842. The jockey in the painting is 17 year old William Carroll (1835-1856), one of four jockeys working at John Osborne's stable in Coverham cum Agglethorpe in Yorkshire. Carroll is shown in Meiklam's familiar colors. Stilton won not only the 1852 Metropolitan Stakes, but also that year's Northumberland Plate at Newcastle, and came second in the Chester Cup in a huge field of 42 runners. One of the best 3 year olds of 1852, he was entered in the Goodwood Cup, but was beaten half a mile due to being nobbled by poisoning. Never the same again, he was sold to Prussia in November 1852. C

BLAIR ATHOL by Alfred de Prades (British, 1840–1895)

Oil on panel, 24 ¾” x 18 ¾” Signed, inscribed Blair Athol, a foal of 1861, matured slowly and never raced at 2. In the spring of his sophomore year, he showed great promise, having been entered in nine races but never starting in any. His difficulties resulted from abuse, including kicks to the legs and genitals, by a stable lad being paid by bookmakers to prevent him from running. On May 25, 1864, Blair Athol made his first career start in the Epsom Derby and, after eight false starts, drew clear at the finish to win. Between May and September he made seven starts, winning five, including the St Leger. Blair Athol was retired after the St Leger with a tendon injury. At stud he was champion sire in 1872, 1873, 1875, and 1877.
