          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

[MAP]. DES BARRES, Joseph Frederick Wallet (1721-1824). The Harbour of Charles Town in South-Carolina... London, 1777. Engraved map with old hand-coloring. Matted and hinged, sheet 851 x 629 mm, laid down on paper, some browning near centerfold, lower border partially in facsimile. Inset view of Charleston harbor. A RARE AND IMPORTANT REVOLUTIONARY-ERA CHART based on surveys taken in the weeks prior to the unsuccessful British attack on Charleston in June 1776. Their ambitious assault on Charleston, South Carolina, aimed to seize control of the Southern colonies early in the American Revolutionary War. Under the command of General Sir Henry Clinton and Admiral Sir Peter Parker, British forces targeted Fort Sullivan (later known as Fort Moultrie), which guarded Charleston Harbor. Despite a formidable bombardment by the British fleet, the fort, commanded by Colonel William Moultrie and constructed from resilient palmetto logs, withstood the attack. The spongy nature of the palmetto wood absorbed the cannon fire, and the fort’s defenders, including the brave Sergeant William Jasper, managed to repel the British forces. This map would become the primary reconnaissance work for Charleston and unquestionably utilized by the British in the planning and execution of the subsequent siege in 1779. This second attempt proved successful marking one of the worst American losses of the Revolutionary War, giving the British control over the South Carolina port and a strategic foothold in the southern colonies. According to the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich), this is the fifth or sixth state (watermark not visible) with more place names added and the inset re-engraved. Phillips, p.221; Streeter, 706 (the entry for the Atlantic Neptune, with Charleston chart included as vol. III item 19); Sellers & Van Ee 1537; Stevens Atlantic Neptune Collection, 162B. This lot is located in Chicago. Property from The Private Collection of Ms. Darla Moore, Charleston, South Carolina

DES BARRES, Joseph Frederick Wallet (1729-1824). A Sketch of the Operations before Charlestown the Capital of South Carolina. [London: 17th June 1780]

          Est: $12,000 - $18,000

DES BARRES, Joseph Frederick Wallet (1729-1824). A Sketch of the Operations before Charlestown the Capital of South Carolina. [London: 17th June 1780]. An important large-scale map of Charleston Harbor during the Revolutionary War: the rare first state, printed on Bates paper and with the imprint intact. RBH records just two copies at auction since 1990, both in later states. Following the failure of major strategic efforts in the north, the British shifted their focus to the American Southern Colonies, launching the siege of Charleston on 1 April 1780. The present map depicts the fortifications, encampments and vessels involved in the six-week siege that forced American troops, on May 12, 1780, into their largest surrender of the war. “The most useful single plan for interpreting this campaign. The very large scale enables depiction of the military information pertaining to Clinton’s successful siege of Charleston in great detail. The British forces are shown by regiment, keyed to the lengthy descriptive references. The parallels of the investment and defensive lines are clearly shown […] The ships of both fleets are illustrated; the legend names them and indicates number of guns for each” (Nebenzahl 80). Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres emigrated to England from Switzerland in the 1750s, having studied at the University of Basel under the great mathematicians David and James Bernouilli. After training as a military engineer at the Royal Military College at Woolwich he was appointed lieutenant in the Royal American Regiment of Foot (the 60th, composed largely of foreign officers) in 1756. One of his fellow officers was the surveyor Samuel Holland, a Dutchman, the future surveyor general of the Northern District of North America, who in 1758-59 instructed the young Captain James Cook in the art of surveying. Holland and Cook were Des Barres's principal collaborators on the Atlantic Neptune. In 1763, recognizing the Navy's acute need for satisfactory charts of the North American coast, the British Admiralty engaged Des Barres to conduct a systematic survey of the entire eastern Seaboard. He spent the next ten years surveying the coasts of Nova Scotia, the dreaded Sable Island (site of innumerable shipwrecks, on which he spent two years), and parts of New Brunswick. Returning to England in 1774, Des Barres devoted the next decade to publishing his own surveys, including his magnificent Atlantic Neptune in which this map appeared. Stevens, Catalogue, 164(a). Large engraved map on two sheets joined, the whole 1097 x 792mm, the land areas in contemporary hand color, title in cartouche to bottom left above key naming the various fortifications, encampments, vessels and quarters during the siege, inset vignette map of the wider harbor to bottom right, imprint intact below scale, printed on Bates paper (repaired chip to blank lower left corner, several small marginal tears or nicks, most repaired, one or two extending unobtrusively into the printed area, the join strengthened on verso, some minor discoloration to join and areas of the margin).

Des Barres Four Views of Boston

          Est: $6,000 - $10,000

Four Views of Boston. Joseph Frederick Wallet des Barres (1732-1824). Engravings with original hand color. London, c. 1777. 31 x 23 inches sheet, 33 1/2 x 40 1/2 inches framed "Boston, seen between Castle William and Gavernors Island, Distant 4 Miles; Appearance of the Highlands of Agameticus, New Penobscot Hills to the Eastwards at 3 to 4 Leagues off Shore; Boston Bay, the lighthouse bearing N. W. by W Distant one League; The Entrance of Boston Harbor" Des Barres had been sent to America by the British Admiralty to survey the coasts of the Maritime Provinces. These provinces, so recently acquired from France, had never been adequately mapped, and Des Barres spent the next ten years constructing a series of charts of unparalleled accuracy and beauty. At the outset of the American Revolution, he was assigned the task of compiling his work into an atlas that would enable the British Navy and Merchant Marines to navigate safely in North American waters. Des Barres returned to England in 1774 and began to prepare his charts for publication. Yet the contents of his Atlas, Atlantic Neptune, were not limited to sea charts for military use, for it included several more evocative and artistic views like this one. Clearly Des Barres's interests in America transcended those imposed upon him by the English military, for this view was included in the Atlantic Neptune not because of its strategic usefulness, but because of its aesthetic appeal. The inherent merit of this finely engraved view is made more lustrous because it was included in only a handful of copies of the atlas, and is today infamously rare. Des Barres's Atlantic Neptune, remains one of the landmark monuments in coastal mapping, and this singular view offers a rare glimpse into the cartographer's considerable artistic talents.
