The Negrobonis were a noble family of public administrators and men of arms in Val Trompia, Brescia. 4to (215 x 149 mm). Greek, Roman and Hebrew type, 36 lines. collation: a-y8 z4 aa-dd8 [ee]4: 216 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device on title-page in red, woodcut Aldine devices to z4 and dd8, printed in black and red. (First two gatherings loosening.) binding: Contemporary vellum (217 x 147 mm), traces of four pairs of ties. (Spine and edges worn, lacking ties.) provenance: Negroboni, family library (Brescia), numerous inscriptions ("Nigrobono dei Nigroboni," "Hieronymus Nigrobonus" [perhaps Hieronymus de Negrobonis of Brescia, laureatus Bologna 13 October 1626], "Jacomo," and "Xan Antonio Nigrobono") on lower pastedown, apparently by Giovanni Girolamo Negroboni (1533-1576), and his two sons, Giacomo (1560-ca. 1624) and Giovanni Antonio (1569?-1597) — early marginalia and underlining — Sotheby's London, 30 June-1 July 1980, lot 287. acquisition: Purchased at Sotheby's via Quaritch. references: UCLA 224; Renouard 98/7; Edit16 46706; USTC 840315

      Gregorius, Nazianzenus, Saint. Orationes XXX, translated by Willibald Pirckheimer, with contributions by Desiderius Erasmus and Johannes Straub, 2 parts in 1, collation: α4 A-Z6 A*6 B*8 Aa-Hh6 Ii Kk8, large woodcut printer's device to title and verso of colophon f., woodcut historiated initials, occasional ink marginalia, water-stained throughout, some worming in text, mostly at ends, occasional spotting, lightly browned, later endpapers, contemporary blind-stamped panelled calf over wooden boards, sympathetically rebacked, preserving majority of original backstrip in compartments with later gilt lettering, wormed, rubbed and scuffed, with some loss of leather, but still solid, folio (310 x 202mm.), Basel, [Hieronymus Froben & Nikolaus Episcopius in the] House of Froben, September, 1531.  *** Rare first Latin translation of the complete orations of Gregory of Nazianzus. The edition is praised by Erasmus in a prefatory letter. Pirckheimer (1470-1530) was a German lawyer, humanist, and translator of classical texts into German and Latin.  Provenance: W.B.N. Green, 1850 (ink inscription to front free endpaper); H. ?Whitridge, 1839 (ink inscription to head of title).  Literature: Adams G1158; VD 16 G 3082.
