ARTIST: Tomaso De Simone (Italian, c. 1805 - 1888) NAME: Sail Ship YEAR: 1883 MEDIUM: oil on canvas CONDITION: Relined. Restretched. Some craquelure. Some scattered inpaintings. SIGHT SIZE: 14 x 22 inches / 35 x 55 cm FRAME SIZE: 19 x 26 inches / 48 x 66 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NAME VARIANTS: Tomasso Desimone CATEGORY: antique vintage painting AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED. CONTACT US SKU#: 118493 US Shipping $75 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: The Neapolitan port painter, Tomaso de Simone is considered to be one of the most important ship portraitists who practiced in the Italian seaport cities. The father of noted sea painter Antonio de Simone, Tomaso specialized in oils, the majority depicting warships and merchant vessels. He also created scenes of the Battles of Lissa (1867) and Alexandria (1882).The architectural properties of Tomaso de Simone's paintings are exceptional. His hull shapes have fullness and flexibility, his rigging shows a wealth of detail. His portrait of the American continental navy frigate constellation was proven so accurate that it was used as a guide for restoration of the ship, still afloat today in Baltimore. From an artistic standpoint, his paintings are richly executed and dramatically appealing.Although not as prolific as his son, the works of Tomaso de Simone are arguably more important. In recent years, their value has increased dramatically as they become more rare and sought after by important museums and private collectors world wide.

TOMMASO DE SIMONE (CIRCA 1805-1888) H.M.S. 'Trafalgar' becalmed in the Bay of Naples Oil on canvas Signed and dated 'De Simone 1863' (lower right) 10 x 15in. (25 x 38cm.) Originally a First Rate of 120 guns ordered in 1825 as one of five 'Saint George' class three deckers, Trafalgar was cut down to a two-decker in 1859 and fitted with Maudslay engines. When launched in 1841 her fine bust-length figurehead of Nelson was sporting a hat as, in 1843, the carvers Hellyer & Son were allowed £5.15.0 to modify the figure as the hat was fouling the bowsprit -- although interestingly the contemporary model and engravings depicted a hatless Nelson. A new figurehead, complete with hat as seen in this picture, was issued in 1859 and survives to the present day at Portsmouth Dockyard. Trafalgar only served in the Mediterranean in 1863 before becoming a Coastguard vessel at Portland, a cadet training ship (when she was re-named Boscawen ) and was broken up in 1906 after sixty-five years afloat.

Oil on canvas portrait of an American steam driven sailing ship anchored in the bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the background. Two rowboats with fishermen in the foreground with a sailboat in the distance. Housed in an ebonized wood frame. Signed and dated lower right "DE Simone 1867".. NOTE: USS Frolic (1865-1883) - Confederate ship Named Advance until 1865. Advance, originally a 902-ton side-wheel steamer, was built at Greenock, Scotland, in 1862 for use as a River Clyde packet. Purchased by the State of North Carolina under the name Lord Clyde in 1863, she was renamed Advance (a name frequently given as A.D. Vance), and put to work running the Federal blockade. She was one of the most successful Confederate blockade runners, making more than twenty voyages before her capture by USS Santiago de Cuba off Wilmington, North Carolina, on 10 September 1864. Taken into the United States Navy soon thereafter, she served as USS Advance until June 1865, when she was renamed Frolic. Purchased by the U.S. Navy from the prize court in that month, she was commissioned as USS Advance in October 1864. During the rest of that year, and into 1865, she was active off the North Carolina coast and took part in the assaults on Fort Fisher in December 1864 and January 1865. Advance went to New York in March 1865 and was out of commission there until June, when she was placed back into service and renamed Frolic. Frolic was then assigned to the European Squadron as a dispatch vessel, a mission for which she was well suited by virtue of her small size and good speed. Arriving at Flushing, the Netherlands, in July 1865, she operated in northern European waters and in the Mediterranean until 1869. Again out of commission from May to September 1869, Frolic's next active service was patrolling the North Atlantic fishing grounds in April-October 1870. After another period in reserve, she operated off New England for several months in 1872 and was then station ship at New York. In 1875-77, she cruised in South American waters as a unit of the South Atlantic Squadron. Decommissioned for the last time in October 1877, USS Frolic was sold in October 1883. She was a civilian ship, retaining the name Frolic, for a few years after that. SIZE: 13" x 20". Overall 15-3/4" x 23". CONDITION: Good, craquelure, lined. 49371-2

Antonio De Simone Workshop, Two Captain's Paintings, c. 1890

            Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Gouache on paper Italy, circa 1890 Workshop of Antonio De Simone (1851-1907) - Italian marine painter Pair of captain's paintings in a storm and on the coast of Naples Each sheet inscribed lower center, 'S. S. Boskenna Bay' Overall dimensions, with frame: 65 x 89 cm, sheet size: 45 x 59 cm Provenance: German private collection Captain's paintings were often depicted from the 18th to the early 20th century. They were mostly commissioned by captains, who used them as a souvenir. De Simone and his workshop were specialized in ship depictions in the port of Naples The present gouaches were most likely executed in the workshop of the Italian marine painter Antonio De Simone (1851-1907), who was specialized in ship depictions in the port of Naples. They depict the SS Boskenna Bay, an English steamer, on the high seas, as well as in front of the harbor of Naples. The gouaches were probably celebrating the safe arrival of the ship to the harbor, after resisting a strong storm. Both paintings are inscribed lower center, 'S. S. Boskenna Bay'. The works are in visually good condition. In parts there are some touch ups and retouched scratches as well as a few small color losses. One sheet shows a retouched tear to the upper right edge. Due the technique the sheets are a little wavy. The sheets are matted. The gilded black wood frame has very few wear marks. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 65 x 89 cm. The sheet dimensions are 45 x 59 cm. Antonio De Simone (1851-1907) Antonio De Simone and his father Tommaso De Simone (c. 1805-1888) are among the most important Italian marine painters of their time. Antonio primarily worked in gouache, while Tommaso mainly painted in oil. Antonio specialized in ship depictions in the harbor of Naples. His clients were mostly the captains themselves. A characteristic element of Antonio De Simone's ship paintings is the bright blue in the sky and sea. Works by Antonio De Simone were in great demand during his lifetime, especially among sailors. In recent years, there is again an increasing interest for his works in the international art market, as they are rare on the market. Simone representations of coastal headlands are among the most sought after works. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
