To advertise the tiny West African nation of Togo, which declared independence in April 1960, Dessirier focuses on the magnificent Kpalimé Falls, where the flamingoes wade. The Dahomey Kingdom ruled this part of West Africa from the 16th to the 19th century. Dessirier created many African travel posters during the 1960s; in the 1980s, he turned to sculpture. Dardalet, Grenoble Thick brushstrokes and the strong, moody palette of Dessirier create the inimitable emotion of Africa at the edge of the 1960s. This undated poster almost certainly marks Côte d'Ivoire's independence, declared in December 1958 and accepted by France in the summer of 1960. The new nation's forest elephants – now sadly down to a few hundred in number – and the (then) brand-new Place de la Republique in the newly named capital of Abidjan are both illustrated.
