An antique French 19th century Louis XVI patinated bronze and ormolu statue of a young woman in ancient robes, attributed to Pierre Louis Detrier, 1822 to 1897. In one hand the woman holds a torch. She is leaning on an altar modeled as a circular fluted column decorated with floral garlands and has two doves intended for sacrifice to the base. In ancient times, doves were dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite as a symbol of innocence and love at the base. Signed to the base. Detrier, Pierre-Louis (France, 1822-1897). Amour Maternel / Mother and Child. Bronze in a medium golden with a red-brown patina. Impressed Detrier, on back. 21 1/2". Considered one of a number of talented French sculptors of the late 19th century, though overlooked by scholars and collectors a like for decades, Détrier was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salons from 1866 virtually until his death. The celebrated teacher of Rodin, Jules Dalou, was known for his sensitive depictions of maternal beauty. Detrier’s study of a young mother drying her child successfully illustrate an affectionate and protective nature of this relationship. Lami, in Dictionnaire des Sculpteurs de l’Ecole Francaise, (p.190) lists it as Amour Maternel, a bronze group for the Salon of 1883, as does Kjellberg's Dictionary of French 19th Century Bronzes, p.287. Comparisons can be made with the art of William Bouguereau and Huges Merle, who established French artistic concern with the issues of womanhood during the same period, not to mention the sculptor Paul Dubois, whose group "La Charité", closely resembles the present model. Provenance: From a private collection, Bethesda, MD since 2003.
