    Apr. 13, 2024

    Robert Duerloo Retrievers Dog Bronze

    Est: $150 - $200

4 1/2" by 4 1/2" by 3 1/8". Robert Deurloo (Born 1946) is active/lives in Idaho, California. Robert Deurloo is known for Wildlife sculpture. Robert Deurloo began as a mining engineer in Wyoming, but twenty-five years ago he visited the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and was intrigued to try sculpting himself. A self-taught sculptor of wild animals, he is known for the distinctive patinas of his bronze which give the appearance of polished stone. He achieves this by heating the bronze until it glows after it is cast and then treating it with acids and minerals. He lives in a wilderness area near Salmon, Idaho, surrounded by mountains, forests and rivers inhabited by the animals that he sculpts. He has won numerous awards including "Best Sculpture" in the Collectors' Society in Minneapolis. In 1998, Smithsonian Institution personnel chose his bison sculpture, "Prairie Patriarch" for their permanent collection because it is an all-American symbol.

    Jan. 28, 2023

Robert Deurloo (1945 - ) Gentle Giant III Bronze

    Est: $5,000 - $10,000

Featured in this lot is a bronze sculpture called "Gentle Giant III" by Idaho artist, Robert Deurloo, who was born in 1945. The sculpture features a wonderfully and professionally crafted bronze construction which features a beautifully crafted, unique delivery of patina that makes this giraffe look life-like. The beautiful texturing to the spider webbing makes up the shading of the giraffe's spots and shows gilt decoration to the tips of the horns. The artist's signature can be seen on the inside of the back right leg along with the numbering of 16/50. Robert Deurloo only makes 100 of each piece of artwork and usually a larger and smaller example. This piece was originally bought for $15,000.00 and was acquired in 2017. Robert Deurloo is a professional sculptor who creates exquisite bronze wildlife sculptures, and due to an exotic patina process, they appear to be of polished stone. His sculptures are cast from molten bronze, but due to an elaborate and exotic patina process, they appear to be chiseled from the granite of the Sawtooth Mountains. A combination of intense heat and various acids and minerals produce the polished stone patinas. A self-taught artist, his style blossoms from within, rather than forged by external teachings. He has learned over his 25 year career that capturing every detail in a sculpture can actually detract from the impact of the piece. The condition of this bronze is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this bronze giraffe are 35 1/4" x 19 1/4" x 6 1/2".*

ROBERT DEURLOO STANDING ELK BRONZE SCULPTURE

    Est: -

Robert Deurloo (Born 1946) Standing Elk Bronze Sculpture. A westerner by residence and subject matter, Robert Deurloo sculpts the wildlife he spends his days observing in the remote mountains of Salmon River country. Basically self-taught, he began sculpting in the 1970s when he saw in a museum some pieces he wanted but couldn't afford. So he decided to make his own. Since then he has won a number of awards including: "Best Sculpture" of the Collectors Society Show in Minneapolis; "Best Interpretive Bronze," Ducks Unlimited National Wildlife Show in Kansas City; and "Best Wildlife Sculpture" in the Saratoga Art Show. His work is a combination of abstraction and realism, and he prefers to suggest rather than leave nothing to viewer imagination. His reduction of some of the detail enhances the appearance of the stone, but for certain parts of the animal such as the antlers on a deer he is meticulous about detail.
