Thornton (1928) Dial Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1928 - d. 2016

Thornton Dial Sr. was born into poverty in a rural town in West Alabama. Sometimes known as "Buck" Dial, he became a "jack-of-all-trades", doing mainly iron work and cement work to support himself and his family, while creating assemblages on the side from castoff materials. Fellow self taught artist, Lonnie Holley, brought Dial's work to the attention of art world in 1987 by introducing him to collector Bill Arnett. Arnett championed Dial's works and facilitated his involvement in museum shows, where his two and three-dimensional works began drawing comparisons to Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. In 1993, "Thornton Dial: Image of the Tiger" became the artist's first major solo museum exhibition of the 65-year-old African American painter. Organized by guest curator, Thomas McEvilley, this exhibition was presented at the Museum of American Folk Art and The New Museum. In the fall of 2005, the Houston Fine Arts Museum hosted a show, "Thornton Dial in the 21st Century". Dial's works have been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, the de Young Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2014.

American Thornton Dial Watercolor Charcoal Painting Woman With Bird On Head

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Attributed to Thornton Dial ( 1928-2016) watercolor and charcoal "Woman with Bird on Head" painting. Size: 24 1/4"x 20 1/4" framed, 14 3/4" x 10 3/4" unframed.A folk artist who does paintings, assemblage and sculpture, Thornton Dial, Sr., known as Buck, spent his life in Alabama, where he married, had three sons and two daughters and lived in Bessemer. He was the "patriarch" of a clan of noted folk artists including his son, Thornton Dial Jr., known as "Little Buck", and Richard Dial. His art emanates from his concerns about racial and male/female relationships in America, with assemblages representing "what makes up the world as he sees it" (Rosenak, 102) and expresses his feelings about conflict and harmony and the importance of community. His work reflects his special concern about the struggle of blacks in white-dominated society. He uses oil and water base paint and bold colors for his paintings and makes his sculptures from found objects and easily acquired materials such as tin, tree roots, bottles, carpet and plastic. Many of his pieces are large, often four feet square or more.Dial Sr. held many jobs including carpenter, house painter, cement mixer and iron worker. From 1952 to 1980, he worked for the Pullman Standard Company, which manufactured railroad cars in Bessemer. After retirement from that job, when not pursuing his art interests, he raised turkeys and made wrought-iron lawn furniture with his sons. From the time he was young, according to him, he "was always making ideas, but the notion that they were art never occurred to me until I met Bill Arnett" in 1987. Arnett was an art dealer from Atlanta and was especially interested in folk art. Arnett promoted his art and arranged an exhibit of Dial's work in 1988 at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and in 1989 at the Latin American Gallery in New York City.~ . Apr. 06, 2023

    THORNTON DIAL (1928 - 2016) Untitled.

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

THORNTON DIAL (1928 - 2016) Untitled. Enamel on plywood board, 1988. Approximately 667x768 mm; 26 1/4x30 1/4 inches. Provenance: Parker Gallery, Los Angeles; private collection, Connecticut. Exhibited: Thornton Dial. The Earliest Years: 1987-89., March, New York, June 6 - July 31, 2001. Born in Emelle, Alabama, Thornton Dial was raised by his great-grandmother. He moved to Bessemer, and became a metalworker at a local Pullman-Standard boxcar factory until its closing in 1981. Dial is a self-taught artist who first welded metal scraps and other found objects into assemblages. Dial later used more traditional materials, creating paintings, works on paper and assemblages that explore a wide range of socio-political subjects from war and religious mysteries to racism and homelessness. In the late 1980s, Dial was introduced to Atlanta art collector William S. Arnett by artist Lonnie Hall. Dial was able to focus on his art full time with a monthly stipend from Arnett who then introduced Dial's work to the art world. Dial's career quickly blossomed, and by 1993, he had two concurrent solo exhibitions in New York--one at the Museum of American Folk Art, the other at the New Museum of Contemporary Art. His first career retrospective, Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial, was exhibited at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and then between 2011-13 travelled to New Orleans, Atlanta and Charlotte. On November 24, 2014, The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that 57 works by African American artists from the South —including 10 works by Dial—had been donated by the Souls Grown Deep Foundation from its William S. Arnett Collection. Works by Dial are now in numerous institutional collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
